Maolu
Maolu, located at no.18-19, Jixiang lane, Dongfeng West Road, Kunming, was built in 1852. It is a combination of Chinese and western residential buildings. The owner of the house, Zhang maodi, got his name from this. Now it's transformed into a restaurant.
Maolu facing south is a civil structure with a hard top. "An Indian architecture". The main room is five rooms wide and two rooms deep; the wing room is three rooms wide and one room deep. On both sides of the gate of the west chamber are the gate pillars made of bluestone. On the gate pillars are the top of the ticket, and on the top are inlaid horizontal plaques, which are called "Maolu". The horizontal plaque is decorated with a triangle top. This kind of western style facade is organically combined with the traditional square courtyard, which is a popular architectural feature of Chinese and Western style in Kunming during the period of the Republic of China. It is one of the excellent traditional dwellings in Kunming.
The whole courtyard, brick by brick, stone by wood and interior furnishings have all gone through more than 100 years. The old houses that completely retain the architectural features of the Qing Dynasty are few and far between in Kunming today.
The renovated restaurant, called "old house of Kunming", deals in Yunnan local cuisine. Its traditional food such as steamed chicken, Baikuai and cooking pot is quite unique.
