In 1973, a cultural relics office was set up in Zibo Cultural Bureau, located in the exhibition hall of Zhongxin Road, Zhangdian District. In November 1975, Zibo museum was officially established in the city exhibition hall.
In 1981, the municipal government decided to cancel the municipal exhibition hall and merge it into the Municipal Museum. Since then, the function of the museum has been gradually improved, and the social education role has become increasingly obvious. It has gradually developed into a standardized comprehensive museum with a building area of 2250 square meters.
In 1989, another 1200 square meters of cultural relics storehouse and administrative office building were built.
In the 1990s, Zibo City was approved by the State Council as a coastal open city in Shandong Peninsula and named as a provincial historical and cultural city by the provincial government. The Museum of Zibo City can no longer meet the needs of urban development and museum cause.

The roof of the new building is composed of eight blue arched domes, which represent the characteristics of five districts and three counties in Zibo City. It has become a landmark of urban civilization.
