Stone road is located in the west of the north section of Changxu road in Suzhou city. It starts from Changxu road in the East, ends at yadanqiao in the West and turns south to Jinmen road.
Place name allusion
The stone road was built by Sheng Xuanhuai, the Minister of trade and convention of the Ministry of industry in the late Qing Dynasty, for the convenience of family members living in front of the tianku to stay in the garden. According to the detailed map of Suzhou city published by Suzhou book collection office in 1914, the stone road is located between Shangtang street and yangshuli via lurongfangkou. The pictures of Suzhou City, Wu County and Suzhou are all marked with stone roads. Today's stone road from Changxu road to yadanqiao was called Dama road at that time (from qianwanli bridge to Xinmin bridge, Guangji Bridge, yadanqiao to shilukou, turn south to xumen, turn to Panmen, and turn east to Qingchang). The section from yadanqiao to Jinmen was called hengma road at that time (from Jinmenkou to Yongfu bridge, turn north to yadanqiao). It was changed to today's name at the beginning of the "Cultural Revolution".
Development history
Stone road as a business district has a long history. In 1895, when the Treaty of Shimonoseki was signed, Suzhou and other four cities were listed as trading ports. In order to preempt before opening to Japan, Zhang Zhidong, governor of the two rivers, together with Lu Runxiang, an official gentry from Suzhou, decided to set up shops in changmenwai, xumenwai and panmenwai in advance to develop them. This move was supported by Sheng Xuanhuai. Around 1949, there were 101 shops in Shilu. After 1978, after the whole block transformation and expansion, Shilu commerce and trade turned from decline to prosperity. By 1994, there were more than 30 apartments and commercial buildings with more than 6 floors along Shilu. The business area of the business district has expanded from 30000 square meters to 300000 square meters. Ganjiang Road, Jinmen Road, Liuyuan Road, Tongjing Road, Changxu Road, Shangtang street, etc. near Shilu have also been widened or extended The transportation network of the center has become one of the three major business districts in the ancient city of Suzhou.
Street status
The stone road, 373 meters long and 7.9 to 13.8 meters wide, is a prosperous commercial area outside changmenwai, Suzhou. It was originally asphalt pavement, but now it is strip stone pavement.
