architectural composition
The temple is made of blue brick and stone. It is more than 20 meters high, solemn, old and perfect. He is superior and has extraordinary momentum. The temple is divided into the front hall, the back hall, the ancestral hall and the wing rooms of the monks' houses on both sides, with a total of several hundred meters of buildings. Dragon gecko ridge, eaves carved wall carved, magnificent and spectacular. There is a broad lawn in front of the temple, which can park more than 20 cars (the road has been built to the top of the mountain, and there is a special parking lot on the right side of the temple). Two pairs of stone lions guard the two sides of the gate, and the old and vigorous trees stand in the sky. There is also a small mountain god earth Temple down the lawn. The whole temple is hidden in a lush, sun blocking forest, under the cliffs, which makes the pilgrims have a sense of mystery, reverence and nostalgia.
Historical era
No one can tell the age of Furong Temple by visiting the oldest elders in the area, and no one can tell the construction time of Furong Temple by consulting the oldest local historical materials.
In the Ming Dynasty, Xiong Shida said in his article rebuilding Furong nunnery: "the works of Furong mountain, such as Shao, began in the Eastern Han Dynasty, a place where strange people began to practice." It can be inferred that Furong temple was established no later than the Eastern Han Dynasty.
In the sixth patriarch's magic altar Sutra, it is recorded that when the abbot of Huineng monk Caoxi Baolin Daochang was often invited by Wei Lashi, Shaozhou capital, to the Dafan temple in the city to give lectures. The hall was always crowded with more than 1000 monks and Taoists listening to the sixth patriarch's Kaiyuan. The sixth ancestor came to Caoxi in the second year of Yifeng (677 A.D.) of Emperor Gaozong of Tang Dynasty, and it opened for 37 years before and after Dafan temple in Shaozhou. In 1991, a tombstone unearthed near Furong Temple recorded: "the lotus vein is shining, the southern king of Qujiang County, the capital of daoshao Prefecture, Guangdong Province, lives in a place where he taboo other people in Kanghu Buried in Furong nunnery right.... " It has a history of more than 400 years. This monument is now placed on the stone wall of PINQUAN pool at the back of the temple. When visitors see it, they should not mistake it for the tomb of a scholar in Kanghu.
Up to now, there are two green mountain steles embedded on the wall of the right corridor of the front hall. One is the 34th year of Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1696 A.D.), which was set up to record the "restoration of Zhenwu emperor Hall of Furong mountain" in that year. "Zhenwu holy emperor" refers to the Xuanwu of Taoism. This monument proves that Furong temple was occupied by Taoists more than 300 years ago and became a Taoist temple. The other one records "the number of restoration of Furong temple is listed and Ji". Unfortunately, the rest of the inscriptions are almost unrecognizable because they are completely weathered. The two steles are the same kind of stone, and this piece is so weathered that I can imagine how old it is.
Because Furong temple had both Buddhists and Taoists, it became the amphibious holy land of Buddhism and Taoism. When monks talk about Buddhism, Taoism comes to preach. Monks come to build temples and Taoists to build temples. Today, Furong temple still retains the architectural style of both temple and temple, and the carving art of both Buddhism and Taoism, which is a rare miracle in the whole country.
present situation
Before the Anti Japanese War, there were still monks practicing in Furong temple. Because of the continuous war, the temple was abandoned and even used to be a prison for prisoners. The so-called "paradise" and "fairyland on earth" suddenly became a place of execution in hell, and the mountain gate was already broken and empty.
Until 1983, Shaoguan municipal government began to repair Furong temple. However, due to the fact that the abbot could not be invited to manage the temple, there was only one empty temple. There was neither Buddha statue nor Buddhist service. In 1990, officials of the Municipal Religious Bureau asked for help from the provincial Buddhist Association, which sent master Guangfeng from Guangzhou to manage Furong temple.
Through the efforts of master Guangfeng and his disciples over the past few years, with the support and sponsorship of people from all walks of life, the temple has not only made the "three treasures" complete, the Buddha statues covered with gold, the rituals are normal, and the incense is vigorous. A cement stone road has been built in the middle of the mountain, and a car road to the temple has been built, providing great traffic convenience for pilgrims.
At present, Furong temple is planning to expand and build more than 2000 square meters of buildings, such as Zhaitang, Haihui tower, wangguantai and pinquanting. By then, Furong temple will be a famous ancient temple.
