Former site of Union Medical College
The former site of Xiehe Medical College is a compromise brick and wood hospital complex in Dongcheng District of Beijing during the period of the Republic of China. It is an important historical site and representative building in modern times. It is located at No. 9, santiao, Dongdan, Dongcheng District of Beijing. The original site is Prince Yu's mansion, the 15th son of emperor Taizu of Qing Dynasty. The building was built in 1916. Rockefeller, the American kerosene king, bought this place, demolished the original building, rebuilt the Union Medical College, and built a beautiful complex in the form of traditional Chinese architecture combined with Western decoration. It is divided into North and south parts. The former Union Medical College is located in the south, facing south, with tall and majestic main building and wing building. There is an auditorium in the south of the street, which is a place for school meetings and religious activities. North of the main building is the Affiliated Hospital of the school. Its architectural style reflects both eclecticism and retro ism, so it is known as "Western Medical University in Chinese palace". It was designated as a cultural relic protection unit in Beijing in 1984. In May 2006, it was designated as the Sixth Batch of national key cultural relics protection units by the State Council.
Architectural features
The general layout of the building is symmetrical along the cross axis, forming a courtyard in the West and south. The school buildings and affiliated hospitals cover an area of about 80000 square meters. The design and construction of the building are all in the charge of the Americans. The school building project is divided into two phases: the former site of Xiehe Medical College, Lougong building, Zhegong building and Wenhai building, and the later "a" to "P" buildings, which were built between 1904 and 1925. Lougong building, Zhegong building and Wenhai building are of brick and wood structure with grey brick walls, belonging to the western classical eclecticism style. The later "a" to "P" buildings were built in two phases.
The first phase (1919-1921) was designed by Shattuck Hussey architects. Fourteen buildings numbered "a" to "n" were built. They are of brick concrete structure. The exterior is traditional Chinese form, and the interior is western style decoration. There are 14 buildings including auditorium, teaching building, ward, dormitory and warehouse. Except for the auditorium of "a" building, the other buildings are connected by corridors. Each building has three to five floors, all of which are brick and wood structures, imitating the official palace buildings of Qing Dynasty.
The second phase of the project was designed by architect C. W. anner. In 1925, two "O" and "P" buildings were built, and other buildings were reconstructed. The shape is western style, one floor underground, four floors above ground, two floors above ground, flat top, brick concrete structure. The general layout of the former site of Peking Union Medical College is symmetrical along the cross axis, forming a triad in the West and south.
