Dashan pagoda is located in Dashan temple in Xiying city. Dashan pagoda was first built in the third year of Liang Tianjian (504) and the third year of Qingyuan (1197) of the Southern Song Dynasty. In the first year of Yongle (1403), the temple and pagoda were rebuilt. Today's tower is built in the Ming Dynasty, 40 meters high, with six corners and seven stories. It is a brick wood mixed Pavilion. The top of the tower is a large circular caisson, which is covered with a cast iron bowl and weighs about 5000 Jin. You can have a bird's-eye view of the ancient city of Shaoxing by climbing on the edge ladder. history

It was originally built in Dashan temple, hence its name. The pagoda of the temple has been destroyed. The tower was built in 504, the third year of Liang Tianjian. The pagoda was rebuilt in 1228, 1403 and 1669 respectively. The brick and wood structure pavilion type tower has seven floors on six sides, 40.5 meters high, and the side length of the bottom floor is 3.8 meters. The caisson is placed on the top of the caisson, and the cast iron covering bowl is placed on the top. The eaves of the tower have been destroyed. The tower is hollow, and the original ladder can be boarded, but it has been destroyed. The bricks of the pagoda are mostly engraved with the words "shaodingwuzi (1228) rebuilt". After partial renovation in 1957, only the brick part remained.

Architectural structure

Dashan is a brick and wood structure with six sides and seven floors. It is 40 meters high and used to be the highest building in Shaoxing. Inside the tower, there was a wooden ladder, which could climb to the top of the tower and view the whole city. Flame shaped pot doors are set on the six sides of the ground floor and on the two sides above the ground floor, while the other sides are niche windows. The top of the tower is a round caisson covered with cast iron bowl, weighing 2500 kg. According to folklore, there is a pearl on the top of the pagoda, as big as longan, which can protect Shaoxing from the disaster of strong wind. Unfortunately, the war in Xianfeng Period of Qing Dynasty affected Dashan pagoda. The wooden ladders, pavilions and eaves inside the pagoda were burned to ashes, and the pagoda temple did not exist. Only the words "shaoding Wuzi rebuilt" on the bricks on the inner wall of the tower can be recognized.

In 1957, the government carried out a comprehensive maintenance of Dashan temple, and the pagoda basically maintained its original style. Dashan temple, the same age as Dashan temple, was demolished in 1970 to build a department store on its site. The existing Dashan tower was overhauled in 1957. The tower has seven storeys on six sides. The side length of the bottom floor is 3.8 meters and the wall thickness is 1.6 meters. Each corner is provided with a brick column, which is rolled into a shuttle shape, and a brick round bar is placed on it. Flat seat four shop, waist eaves five shop, brick buttress arch, wood China arch. The remaining timber waist eaves were demolished in 1957. The wooden joists and floors in the tower were destroyed in the early years, only brick holes remained. The second floor is a south facing brick staircase, which is the entrance of the original climbing tower. On the seventh floor of the tower, there is a dome with water chestnut teeth and muddy bricks, and an iron basin is placed on the top. According to the actual measurement, the height from the ground level to the top of the basin is 40.5 meters.

Old Shaoxing folk couplet said: "Xiaojiang bridge, the bridge hole is round, round as a mirror, the mirror shines on the two counties of Shanhui; Dashan tower, the top of the tower is sharp, sharp as a pen, the pen writes all over the world." And the beauty of the ancient Xiaojiang bridge and the ancient Dashan tower in Shaoxing. Today, Dashan tower is surrounded by high-rise buildings and heavy buildings. In the past, the "pole supporting" of the bow of the ship no longer exists. It is still the best viewing location to overlook the majestic posture of Dashan temple in the south.

The best place to view Dashan pagoda is the Xiaojiang pier half a mile northeast of the pagoda. Under the background of Yuandong stone bridge and Beihou street, Dashan pagoda is graceful; the other is on Guangning bridge three miles east of Dashan pagoda. In the west of Guangning bridge, the water surface is wide, and the blue brick houses on both sides of the river reveal the unique charm of the ancient city Shaoxing. The smoke is vast, and there is Wolong mountain as a barrier. Therefore, the Dashan tower on Guangning bridge can enjoy the four words of "unique charm", or it can be said that the beauty of Dashan tower can be enjoyed on Guangning bridge.
