Ancient battlefield of Ulan Butong

Across the river from Saihanba forest farm in Weichang County, Hebei Province, it is part of the famous royal hunting ground. "Ulanbutong" - Mongolian: Red jar. The reddish brown wulanbutong beacon stands on its own in the distance of the meadow. The clear wulangong River, like a warrior wearing silver, goes around the mountain. The lake at the foot of the mountain is as quiet as a mirror. Across the water, wulanbutong beacon is like a urn of red altar, upside down in the blue water. The meadow is full of wild flowers. The grass is as thick as felt. It is soft and pliable when stepping on it. The moist smell of grass in rainy season splashes out from the roots and leaves.

Introduction to history

According to historical records, in 1690 ad, the Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty led 200000 troops to fight a decisive battle with gardan, the king of the remnant Junggar Khanate and the leader of the irut people under the wulanbutong beacon. There were more than 20000 people in the gardan army, who were close to mountains and rivers and close to the high bank across the river. They "tied camels and formed a battle line to wait for them." they laid a large number of camels on the ridge of the mountain, wrapped them with wet felt, and put boxes on their backs to prevent the Qing army from firing. And shot from the camel array, tenacious resistance. The Qing army bombarded the camel array with heavy artillery fire. After a fierce battle for half a day, the camel array was finally blown away and the blood flowed into a river. At night, Tong guogang, Kangxi's uncle and Minister of the interior, led the left wing of the Qing army up the hillside along the river and defeated the gardan army; the right wing was blocked by the marsh river cliff and returned to its original position. The battle continued the next day, with countless casualties on both sides. Tong guogang died bravely, and the soldiers' blood was stained. The lake was called "general paozi" from then on. It is known that "Butong" in Mongolian also means "mist". The war subsided, the thick blood stained the lake water, and the red mist on the lake remained for several days; the fog and water were connected, and the red beacon loomed, so it was named "Ulan (red) Butong". After gardan, he delayed the pursuit of the Qing army by scheming and fled across the Xilamulun river at night. But along the way suffered a plague, returned to khobudo, only a few thousand people. After the Qing army severely damaged the gardan army, Kangxi personally led the army to pursue it. After the zhaomoduo war, gardan fled to Ordos area to seek survival in Tibet. In 1697, on the way to eheiarar, he died suddenly on the Bank of the buyantu river. After the defeat of a generation of hero gardan, the Qing Dynasty finally won the initial victory of conquering the last tribe of Mongolia.

From the ancient battle field of Ulan Butong to the south, it is Mulan paddock in Bashang grassland. Since the Yuan Dynasty, the grassland with abundant water and grass has been a summer hunting resort for the royal families of all dynasties.
