Xinglong Tropical Botanical Garden, located in Hainan Xinglong overseas Chinese Tourism Economic Zone, was founded in 1957. It is subordinate to the spice and Beverage Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences, Ministry of agriculture. It covers an area of 42 hectares, 176 kilometers away from Haikou City and 97 kilometers away from Sanya City. It is the first tropical botanical garden open to the outside world in Hainan.

Xinglong Tropical Botanical Garden is divided into five functional areas: plant viewing area, experimental demonstration area, science and technology research and development area, three-dimensional planting and breeding area and ecological leisure area; 12 kinds of plants are collected: tropical spice plants, tropical beverage plants, tropical fruit trees, tropical economic trees, tropical ornamental plants, tropical medicinal plants, palm plants, tropical aquatic plants, tropical endangered plants and tropical plants Rare plants, tropical desert plants and vegetable crops.

Historical evolution

Due to its unique geographical location and climatic conditions, the Institute of spices and beverages, Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences, selected Xinglong as an important base for collecting and preserving tropical and Subtropical Crop (plant) germplasm resources at home and abroad in 1957, and established the Xinglong Tropical Botanical Garden.

After more than 40 years, two generations of scientific research workers and "scientific research" More than 2300 unique tropical and Subtropical Crop (plant) germplasms have been collected and preserved, and it has become a comprehensive Tropical Botanical Garden integrating scientific research, science popularization, production, processing, sightseeing and germplasm resources protection.

In the 1980s, it has become a famous tourist attraction in Hainan.

In 1991, it was registered in the National Tourism Administration as a major tourist spot, and it is a designated tourism unit in Hainan Province.

In 1998, it was selected as China's famous scenic spot by four units including the National Tourism Association, and was also selected as Hainan's excellent tourist spot.

Xinglong Tropical Botanical Garden is famous for its unique and rich tropical plants, with more than 1200 plant varieties. The botanical garden has tropical economic crops, including coffee, pepper, vanilla, cocoa and other tropical economic crops, as well as famous, rare and special fruit trees, trees and horticultural plant varieties such as durian and Shanzhuzi. It has preserved wild plant resources and rare species such as Saposhnikovia and introduced precious tropical plant species at home and abroad.

Thousands of tropical ornamental plants have been planted in the garden, including 65 rare and endangered plants, 27 listed in the Red Book of Chinese plants, and 8 introduced and cultivated rare and endangered plants. Many plants facing extinction have been protected, propagated and formed communities.

Major parks

Vanilla experimental demonstration base is the first exhibition area in the botanical garden. Vanilla is a kind of precious tropical vine spice plant. As a high-grade rare spice, it is widely loved by major international food and cosmetics brands, known as the "king of food spices". Yuanzhong was introduced in 1986, and it has made amazing achievements in three years. The dry pod yield per mu can reach more than 42 kg, which is higher than the foreign level of 20-27 kg per mu.

Coffee experiment and demonstration base is the second exhibition area of botanical garden, which can witness the first coffee with "three major beverages in the world". For the botanical garden, which is located in the largest overseas Chinese farm in China, since 1951, overseas Chinese from 21 countries have successively returned to Xinglong. At that time, they brought back the earliest coffee in China. At the same time, coffee, as an economic crop, also carries the mission of rejuvenating China's hot area. And this historical mission is also burdened by "Xinglong Tropical Botanical Garden, the only tropical spice Beverage Research Institute in China". Pepper experimental demonstration base is the third exhibition area of the botanical garden. Here you can see pepper, known as "Paradise seed". Pepper is a spice crop, native to southern India, and is the oldest seasoning in the world. The total area of pepper planted in China is 1.73 hectares, including 1.31 hectares in Hainan. It can be said that Hainan is not only the hometown of pepper in China, but also the main cash crop in Hainan. In 1947, Wang Yuwen, an overseas Chinese, tried to plant pepper in Qionghai, Hainan. In 1956, pepper epidemic broke out in Hainan, resulting in pepper yield of about 30 kg per mu, which seriously affected the development of Hainan's agricultural economy. When our experts prepared to start research, they lagged behind because of the special period of 10 years. Until 1976, everyone's fighting spirit for scientific research for 10 years finally broke out, and they won the prize in the mid-1960s The annual yield of white pepper is more than 600 kg per mu, which is the highest level of pepper production in China. It has won the second prize of scientific and technological achievements of the Ministry of agriculture and reclamation of the people's Republic of China. It has made great contribution to Hainan agricultural economy.

Cocoa experimental demonstration base is the fourth exhibition area of the botanical garden, where you can see cocoa, known as the "mother of chocolate", and also the earliest cocoa plantation in China. We are not unfamiliar with chocolate, but I know little about cocoa, the main raw material of chocolate. Since 1960, cocoa has been officially introduced into the botanical garden for cultivation research, which also fills the research gap of cocoa cultivation in China. As one of the world's three largest beverages, cocoa has become the most popular snack in the world: chocolate, while the botanical garden shows the charm of Chinese cocoa.

Xinglong Tropical Botanical Garden is the result of more than 50 years' construction of the Institute of tropical spice and beverage crops, Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences. The Institute has established a trinity development model of scientific research, development and ornamental tourism, which is strongly supported and helped by the Ministry of technology, the Ministry of Agriculture, Hainan Province and the tourism department.
