Tongliang ancient banyan is an ancient banyan tree with more than 300 years old and nearly 100 air roots. It is located in the square in front of Baoan palace, Tongliang village, Baisha Township, Penghu County, Taiwan. It is near the famous Penghu sea crossing bridge and adjacent to the bridge across hengjiao village of Xiyu township.
Local people regard it as a sacred tree, the only big banyan tree on Penghu island. There are 95 air roots in the shade of old banyan trees, which encircle the open space in front of the temple to enjoy the cool and rest. If you don't observe carefully, it's hard to believe that they all come from the branches of the same tree. Its branches and leaves are luxuriant, forming a natural canopy, covering more than half an mu. It is a rare big banyan tree in the world. In order to protect the branches, the residents surrounded each branch with boards, and supported the huge trees with shelves and pillars in the middle.
The origin of the ancient banyan tree is traced back to the 27th year of Yongli (1673) of the Ming Dynasty, which was planted by the villagers Lin yaoqin. Local people donated money to build a temple next to the tree, which is called Baoan palace. The palace is dedicated to the king of Kangfu. In front of the palace, a stele was erected to explain the origin of the ancient banyan tree. Under the tree, there are stone chairs for tourists and local residents to chat and rest. Next to them are a row of merchants selling specialty products and food.
The broad shade of Tongliang ancient banyan is a place for local villagers to have lunch, play chess and drink tea. When visiting here in hot summer, you might as well slow down and enjoy the protection of divine trees here.
