Sun Moon Mountain

Riyue mountain is located in the southwest of Huangyuan county and the southeast of Qinghai Lake. It is 40km away from Huangyuan county and 100km away from Xining city center. The highest altitude is 4877m. It is a very important dividing line in China's natural geography. On the east side of the sun and the moon, there are good fields and beautiful scenery in the south of the Yangtze River; on the west side, there are vast grasslands and flocks of cattle and sheep, which is a scenery outside the Great Wall. Such a large contrast on both sides of the mountain is rare in China.

Riyue mountain has always been the throat of the mainland to Tibet. Historically, it was the boundary between Tang Dynasty and Tubo. Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty sent Princess Wencheng to Tibet to calm down the war and present her with a mirror. When she arrived at Riyue mountain, Princess Wencheng threw out her mirror and landed on two hills. The east half of the mirror faces west, reflecting the afterglow of the setting sun. The west half of the mirror faces east, shining on the rising moon. So Riyue mountain got its name. The best travel time is from June to September.
