Development history
Historical evolution
The former site of Dalian natural history museum is a city hall building built in 1898 under the rule of tsarist Russia. The building is located in the north of Shengli Bridge in Dalian City, Liaoning Province. It is an ancient building with strong Russian style and one of the representative buildings in the early construction period of Dalian city. In 1997, it was listed as a national key cultural relic protection building by the State Council.
In 1907, the predecessor of Dalian Museum of nature was the "Geological Survey Institute" founded by Japan's "South Manchuria Railway Corporation" after Japan occupied Northeast China.
In 1923, after collecting a large number of natural specimens and materials from Northeast China, the Institute set up an exhibition room, which mainly displayed rock, mineral and some paleontological specimens, and noted the origin, quantity, mining value and use of the specimens. It was only for the viewing and research of a few upper class figures in Japan.
In 1926, due to the increase in the types of specimens displayed, the content of display increased, and the area of specimen collection expanded continuously, covering a variety of resources in Northeast China and Mongolia, the exhibition room was changed into "Manchu Mongolian material reference Museum", which was officially opened to the public in the same year.
In 1928, the "Manchu Mongolian material reference Museum" expanded 2000 square meters on the two wings and back of the original building. It further collected rock and mineral specimens collected from Northeast China, Mongolia, Siberia, Europe and the United States, as well as physical specimens and graphic data of agriculture, animal husbandry, forestry and aquaculture. In November of the same year, the "Manchu Mongolian resource Museum" was established for scientific research and viewing .
In 1932, in addition to displaying the original resource specimens, the folk custom exhibition contents in Northeast China and Mongolia were added, and the name of the museum was changed to "Manchuria resource Museum".
After the liberation of Dalian in 1945, Changchun railway company of China took over the museum on August 23 and changed its name to "Northeast Local Chronicles Museum". The Railway Research Institute entrusted the Soviet Union geological expert yeguoluo Fu as the curator and renovated the original exhibition.
In November 1950, Zhongchang Railway Bureau handed over the museum to the culture and Education Bureau of Dalian Municipal People's government for management. At the same time, the name of the museum was changed to "northeast resources Museum" to enrich and adjust the display contents. It mainly displays the natural resources of Northeast China and the new achievements after the founding of the people's Republic of China, and becomes a cultural front for patriotic socialist education and popularization of scientific knowledge to the masses.
In 1959, on the 14th anniversary of the victory of the Anti Japanese War, it was officially named "Dalian Natural Museum", and Mr. Guo Moruo, then president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was invited to write the name of the museum in his own hand.
