brief introduction
Tangshan Earthquake Monument Square is located in the southwest of the intersection of Wenhua Road and Xinhua Road in the center of the city. The whole square covers an area of 5.44 hectares.
In order to always remember the great natural disaster of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Tangshan and Fengnan on July 28, 1976, commemorate the glorious achievements of Tangshan people in earthquake relief and home reconstruction, and mourn the compatriots who died in the earthquake and the martyrs who died to save people's lives and property, Tangshan Municipal people's government decided to build a memorial square. The square started construction in June 1985 and was completed in July 1986 on the eve of the 10th anniversary of earthquake relief.
scale
Tangshan Earthquake Monument Square is surrounded by green space, with a total green area of 15000 square meters. All the squares outside the green space are paved with cement bricks. There is also a fountain in the west of the square.
On the east side of the center of the square stands the famous Earthquake Monument. In order to build this monument, the Tangshan Municipal People's government collected 143 design schemes from all over the country. After careful evaluation by the selection committee, it finally selected the design scheme co operated by Li Gongchen, Qi Zhida and Zhang Yuli of Hebei Architectural Design Institute.
The monument consists of four parts: platform base, subsidiary monument, main Monument and relief.
The base of the station is square, 69 meters long at the bottom and 2.8 meters high in total. It is divided into four layers with seven steps on each layer, implying that the earthquake occurred in July; the four steps with 28 steps, implying that the earthquake occurred on the 28th. The steps are all made of granite, simple and dignified.
It is 2.96 meters high and 6.5 meters wide. Its outer edge is built with granite stones in the form of ruins, which visually shows that it is a monument about earthquakes. The core of the monument is black polished marble, and the inscription engraved on the front describes the great disaster caused by the Tangshan earthquake and the achievements of Tangshan people in earthquake relief and home reconstruction under the leadership of the Communist Party of China. The inscription was written by Xia Xiangping, executive director of the Chinese Calligrapher's Association. It is in Han Li style, simple and vigorous (see the appendix for the inscription). The back of the auxiliary tablet is an English inscription.
The main stele is located in the center of the platform foundation, 30 meters high, with four independent trapezoidal columns, which are gathered in a center by four different directions. It is like four giant hands stretching out to the sky, symbolizing the indomitable spirit of the people of Tangshan, the strong support from all sides of the country for the earthquake relief and recovery construction of Tangshan, and the unremitting exploration of the earthquake disaster and the spirit of man's determination to conquer nature. The shape of the whole monument is unique, simple and fluent, solemn and majestic, steady and straight. At a height of 8.5 meters to the north of the monument, there is a 3.68-meter-long and 1.6-meter-wide stainless steel plaque engraved with seven characters of "Tangshan Earthquake Monument", inscribed by Hu Yaobang, former general secretary of the CPC Central Committee. The main monument is a reinforced concrete structure with light gray granite slabs on the outside.
At a height of 1.5 meters around the main monument, there are eight groups of reliefs. Each piece of relief in the four directions of North, Southeast and West is 2.3 meters high and 9 meters wide, and each piece of relief in the four corners is 2.3 meters high and 2 meters wide, folded into 90 degrees from the middle. The total area of relief is nearly 100 square meters.
symbolize
A group of relief sculptures in the north have the theme of "the moment of the earthquake". At 3:42 a.m. on July 28, 1976, the disaster suddenly fell, the earth trembled, the house collapsed, people woke up from their sleep, the survivors struggled hard, and immediately stepped forward to rescue their compatriots and national property. In the center of the relief is a naked man, with his legs spread and strong arms stretched out. His twisted waist and strong tendons seem to support the building. Some people on both sides have been killed, some have been seriously injured, and others are rescuing them. It vividly and vividly shows the abruptness of disaster and the intensity of earthquake damage.
A group of reliefs in the northeast corner is a supplement to the North relief: the survivors hold the bodies of their relatives who died in the earthquake and want to cry without tears, while the girl on the other side hides her face and sobs. At that time, people's grief reached the peak.
In the East, the theme of a group of reliefs is "cooperation in earthquake relief". After the CPC Central Committee and the State Council learned of the strong earthquake in Tangshan, they immediately organized the national military and civilian earthquake relief, and more than 100000 PLA soldiers went to the disaster area day and night to rescue people. More than 50000 medical staff, cadres and migrant workers were involved in the rescue and transportation of materials. On the right side of the relief, a group of PLA soldiers rush to the rescue site. In the middle, a burly PLA soldier is holding up a child who has just been rescued. On the left side, a group of people are cleaning up the ruins. Medical staff are examining and treating the injured.
A group of reliefs in the southeast corner are complementary to those in the East: soldiers of the people's Liberation Army holding tools in the middle, migrant workers carrying stretchers on both sides, and medical workers carrying medicine boxes. It symbolizes the strong support of the people of the whole country to the people in the disaster area.
A group of reliefs in the south is "resume production, rebuild home". Tangshan was not destroyed by the earthquake, but she is still struggling tenaciously: eight days after the earthquake, the bicycle factory assembled the first batch of bicycles; ten days after the earthquake, the Jingshan railway was opened to traffic, and Kailuan coal mine also dug out the first truck of "earthquake resistant coal"; more than 20 days after the earthquake, Tangshan Iron and steel company refined the first batch of "Zhiqi steel"; shops opened one after another, and schools opened on time On the relief, the steel workers are lifting the newly rolled steel, the coal miners are using the tramcar to transport the newly mined coal out of the mine, the textile workers are holding bundles of spindles, and in the middle are the shapes of several architectural design experts, who have begun to draw the grand blueprint of the new Tangshan construction.
A group of reliefs in the southwest corner complements the southern relief: coal miners, steelworkers and textile workers are looking to the future with confidence. It symbolizes that Tangshan will rise again under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, the strong support of the people of the whole country and the efforts of the people of the whole city.
A group of reliefs in the west is "the new town of regeneration". After several years of restoration and reconstruction, a large number of residential buildings, industrial plants and public facilities have been built in the urban area of Tangshan. Wide roads have been built, and a new city has sprung up in Eastern Hebei. On the relief, the newly-built high-rise buildings, streets, factories and high-voltage transmission towers form the background. In the middle, two workers in work clothes stand upright. On the right, a couple of old people are overjoyed by the scenery. A group of children born after the earthquake are playing in the sun. On the left, scientific and technological workers are doing research. Agriculture has also achieved a good harvest, and all kinds of agricultural products are abundant. Urban and rural areas are thriving.
A group of reliefs in the northwest corner is a supplement to the Western relief: the working class and scientific and technological workers look forward to the future with great confidence. It symbolizes that Tangshan has a very broad prospect in the cause of socialist construction.
These 8 groups of reliefs are all carved with purple granite. The lines are bold and unconstrained, the composition is rigorous and symmetrical, and the theme is deep and dignified. It condenses the 10-year history of Tangshan earthquake relief, and is a vivid, deep and heavy textbook. It was designed by the Central Academy of Arts and crafts and constructed by Suzhou construction and arts factory. The inscription on the monument was written by Xia Xiangping, executive director of the China Book Association. The back is inlaid with polished granite and engraved with English inscriptions.
Tangshan earthquake relief Monument Square was built in July 1986. On July 28, the Tangshan Municipal People's government held a grand meeting to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the earthquake. Tens of thousands of cadres and people mourned their relatives and martyrs who died in the earthquake relief under the monument. Since then, it has become a place for Tangshan people to hold major gatherings and celebrations. At ordinary times, many people fly kites and have a rest here. Tourists from other places roam in front of the monument and take photos from time to time. At night, the square is full of brilliant lights. The high-intensity colored lights around the monument make the body of the monument more majestic, straight and gorgeous. The colorful fountain in the pool is brilliant and magnificent.
