Panda Valley, the Dujiangyan research center of giant panda breeding, was established in 2006 and officially started construction in May 2010. As a branch of Chengdu Research Base of giant panda breeding, the center will become a bridge between ex situ conservation and in situ conservation. Requirements and principles for the construction of the wild Center: restore and maintain the original natural ecological environment of giant pandas, adopt advanced ecological protection planning concepts, and carry out the construction step by step.
The overall plan of the project is to invest 300 million yuan, with an ecological area of 1.4 square kilometers. After completion, it will accommodate 30-40 giant pandas, 50-100 red pandas and other associated wild animals. At present, the first phase of the project has been completed, and the first batch of wild training giant pandas will be settled in January 2012.
Basic introduction
Panda Valley, the research center of Dujiangyan giant panda breeding and wild release, is located in Baima village, Yutang Town, Dujiangyan, about 50km away from Chengdu. The overall planning land of the center is 2004 mu, with a planned investment of 300 million yuan and an ecological area of 1.4 square kilometers. After completion, the center will accommodate 30-40 giant pandas, 50-100 red pandas and other associated wild animals. In May 2010, the foundation of the center was successfully laid. In December 2011, the first phase of the project was completed. After on-site inspection and acceptance by experts, the conditions for giant panda's wild transition training and stocking were initially met.
The center has made full preparations in animal house construction, indoor and outdoor feeding facilities and equipment, environmental enrichment, feed and personnel allocation. The gate of Yefang center is a giant panda shaped building made of metal materials, 11 meters high. In the semi primitive transition experimental area, giant pandas will temporarily live in animal houses that look like blockhouses, and gradually adapt to outdoor life in the future.
After the six giant pandas are settled in, they will receive the transition training of captive giant pandas to the wild, and then they will be assessed whether they are suitable for being released to nature. However, they are just "advance teams". In the future, more giant pandas will come to participate in the wild transition training. In addition, some giant pandas will live in Panda Valley and only participate in protection education activities.
On the morning of January 11, 2012, six captive born giant pandas will be transferred from a small enclosure in Futou mountain in the northern suburb of Chengdu to the wild release center in Majiagou, Yutang Town, Dujiangyan (microblog). They will be the first individuals to study the transition of wild giant pandas in Chengdu. They will be the first to return to the wild mountains where their ancestors came from and set foot on the way home of the world's largest captive giant panda population. NBA star Yao Ming, who has been committed to wildlife protection, will also go to Panda Valley, the Dujiangyan research center of giant panda breeding and research base in Chengdu, to witness the six "children" on their way home.
The first six giant pandas to settle in "panda Valley" are Xingrong, Xingya, Gongzai, Yingying, Zhizhi and Qiqi. Xingrong and Xingya are twins. They all belong to sub adult giant panda, which is equivalent to human childhood. They develop rapidly, have courage and strong survival adaptability. Gongzai is outgoing and stronger than the giant panda of the same age. He is the creative prototype of the movie Kung Fu Panda 2 and a real "Kung Fu Panda". It took Chengdu Panda Base nearly a year to strictly observe the pedigree, health, genetic background, sex ratio and other aspects, and finally selected 108 giant pandas to form this wild "advance team".
On January 10, 2012, Chengdu Panda Base conducted their last blood test before going to the wild release center. "Star Ya" obediently listen to the instructions of the veterinarian, stretch out "hand", let the veterinarian draw two tubes of blood. The results were normal. The staff also disinfected the transport vehicles and cages.
Future development
In the next two or three years, the center will carry out the second phase construction of the project, mainly including academic exchange center, breeding animal house, youth ecological education experience village, multi-functional cinema, scientific research room, observation station, etc.
On December 21, 2011, Chengdu Research Base of giant panda breeding held a grand press conference in Beijing, officially announcing "Chengdu Giant Panda has entered the era of wild release" at home and abroad. At the meeting, director Zhang Zhihe confidently announced: "in the past, we spent 50 years to save giant pandas, and committed ourselves to the harmony between human beings and giant pandas. In the future, we will spend 50 years or more to let them return to the wild, rather than let them stay in the animal house. This is the mission of Chengdu Panda Base, and Chengdu is also the" hometown of pandas " ’"Our historical mission!"
Majiagou seems to be the place where giant pandas live and die. Sixty years ago, when their ancestors were about to die of starvation, they were rescued by human beings; 60 years later, with the help of human beings, their descendants will follow this road to find their way home. Although the road home is still very long, they have entered the door of the road home. Mao bamboo everywhere, birds singing, flowing springs and waterfalls, Tian highland wide. Here are the footprints left by our ancestors, the leisurely atmosphere of our compatriots, the wild paradise, and the company of many animals Going home is no longer a dream. Giant pandas are spiritual animals, and their attachment to "home" is as affectionate as our human beings. I believe that in the eyes of mankind and with the efforts of giant panda "advance team" stars, this day will surely come.
