Historical evolution
Hong Kong government institute of Technology
In 1937, the governor of Hong Kong, sir Shellu, commissioned the president of the University of Hong Kong, hronell William, to organize the establishment of the Hong Kong official Institute of technology. Located on live Road, Wan Chai District, the college is the first government funded institution in Hong Kong to provide engineering education. It offers courses in maritime radio operation, mechanical engineering and architecture.
Hong Kong Polytechnic
In 1947, the Hong Kong government higher polytechnic was renamed the Hong Kong Polytechnic, offering full-time and part-time courses. In 1956, with a donation of $1 million from the Chinese manufacturers' Federation of Hong Kong and the support of government funding and land allocation, the construction of the honghom school was officially launched, which was unveiled by the governor of Hong Kong, Sir John Grantham, in 1957.
Hong Kong Polytechnic
In 1965, Dr. Zhong Shiyuan proposed the establishment of a Polytechnic in Hong Kong at the Legislative Council meeting of that year.
In May 1969, the Planning Committee of polytechnic was formally established, with Dr. Tang Bingyuan as the chairman. Subsequently, the government adopted the final report of the Committee. With the effective date of the Hong Kong Polytechnic Ordinance on 24 March 1972, the first Council of the polytechnic was established under the chairmanship of Dr. Zhong Shiyuan. At the invitation of the Council, the then governor of Hong Kong, sir MacLehose, was appointed as the first honorary supervisor, while Mr Charles old was appointed as the first president of the Polytechnic.
On August 1, 1972, the Hong Kong Polytechnic (Hong Kong Polytechnic) was formally established to take over the premises and staff of the Hong Kong Polytechnic. Its mission is to provide professional courses and cultivate talents to meet the needs of the society for professional talents. Prior to that, the number of full-time, day part-time and night part-time students in the eight teaching departments of the Hong Kong Polytechnic was 1700, 740 and 9340 respectively.
Most of the technical courses of the Hong Kong Polytechnic have been transferred to Morrison Hill Polytechnic, which was established in 1969, while the Polytechnic has continuously upgraded its teaching quality to the level of the Polytechnic. Since then, it has been developing and expanding. In 1983, it launched its first five bachelor's degree programs. In 1986 and 1989, it launched master's and doctor's degree programs respectively.
Hong Kong Polytechnic University
On November 25, 1994, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University Ordinance came into effect. The polytechnic was granted the status of a university by the University and Polytechnic Grants Committee, and was officially named "Hong Kong Polytechnic University".
On June 1, 2000, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University received a donation of HK $100 million from the Li Ka Shing Foundation. At the donation ceremony, the chairman of the foundation, Dr. Li Ka Shing, personally handed the check of HK $100 million to Sir Hu Ying Xiang, chairman of the Council of the University, and Professor Pan Zongguang, President of the University.
In 2003, the school of Business Administration of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University was officially established; the Department of shipping and logistics management was renamed the Department of logistics, and the first international logistics and shipping research center in Hong Kong was established.
In 2004, PolyU was funded by Microsoft to set up the Microsoft Enterprise System Center. The center has built-in business software and advanced equipment with a total value of 60 million yuan. The laboratory in the center is divided into four parts, including logistics and simulation, business automation, mobile business and knowledge management solutions, etc.
On May 29, 2007, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Zhejiang University held a ceremony to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their cooperation in running schools and the unveiling of the new site of the center. Both sides opened the new site of "international enterprise training center" on the campus of Zhejiang University.
In 2008, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University was invited to participate in the construction of the "bird's nest", the main stadium of the Beijing Olympic Games, and the CCTV Headquarters building

In the same year, PolyU and the Royal College of veterinary medicine of the University of London jointly organized the first Bachelor's degree course in animal care in Hong Kong.
On November 25, 2010, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University was awarded a bronze statue of Dr. Sun Yat Sen by Dr. Sun suifang, the daughter of Dr. Sun Yat Sen and chairman of the Sun Yat Sen foundation for peace education. It was erected in the basement lobby of Shaw run Fu gymnasium.
On September 27, 2011, the five-star teaching and research hotel of Hong Kong Polytechnic University was officially opened. On October 4, Hong Kong Polytechnic University received 2.6 million euro from the European Union to study multilingualism and multiculturalism with 12 overseas universities. PolyU is the first university in Hong Kong and Southeast Asia to receive the EU funded em exchange program

On July 27, 2012, the "sishanyuan" of China Social Work Research Center of Peking University and Hong Kong Polytechnic University was officially opened on the campus of Peking University. On November 13, 2013, PolyU cooperated with Boeing to set up the aviation service research center. The experts of the center include the top engineering talents of PolyU industrial center, who have produced space instruments for the European Space Agency and the Russian Federation space agency

On March 18, 2014, designed by the world famous architect Zaha Hadid and donated HK $249 million by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, the innovation building of Richardson Jockey Club officially opened.
On November 30, 2016, PolyU and Huawei established the first joint laboratory of advanced computing systems and optical communications in Hong Kong.
On May 8, 2018, PolyU established the big data analysis center laboratory, which is the first big data analysis and research facility in Hong Kong to serve and support various departments and departments of the University.
