Introduction
Mui Wo is located in the southeast of Lantau Island in Hong Kong. It is an outlying island area administratively. Meiwo, also known as yinkuangwan, was named after two silver mines in the valley. Emperor min of the Song Dynasty and his attendants once took refuge here, which made Meiwo shine. Now the old ruins are surrounded by new buildings. There are snack shops near the ferry terminal. After crossing the river, you can see the old market. It is also the hub of water and land transportation on Lantau Island. Outside the ferry terminal is the bus terminus. There are shops, restaurants and markets nearby. Along the coast, you can see the beach of Silver Mine Bay.
Historical evolution
As early as the Ming Dynasty in the 16th century, Meiwo Valley had been inhabited by farmers. In the 19th century, it developed into six villages. There is a silver mine in Meiwo, so it is also called "Silver Mine Bay". Many villagers used to mine for a living. For ten years, the mine cave is still clearly visible. Several watchtowers in the village were built by the villagers at that time to guard against pirates and to monitor the entry and exit of ships in the Bay, leaving countless footprints of tourists roaming. By the 1930s, Mui Wo had gradually become a paradise for trendsetters. Hotels and small markets were built along the bay. Visitors came in an endless stream every weekend.
Silver Mine Bay is named after the valley in the past. It is said that it is the place where pirates hide and collect treasure. Mui Wo is located in the eastern part of Lantau Island, an outlying island of Hong Kong. It is a small community composed of many villages, and it is also an important road for Lantau Island's external transportation.
Meiwo wharf is surrounded by a community center with supermarkets, restaurants and banks. The bus terminus at the pier has multiple routes leading directly to various districts of the island, such as Bay o, Tong Fuk, Tung Chung, Ngong Ping, Tai O and Hong Kong International Airport. It only takes more than 10 minutes to reach Silver Mine Bay beach.
Silver Mine Bay is a famous sea bathing resort on Lantau Island. It's a pleasure to walk and barbecue on the beach. When the tide is low, Silver Mine Bay is a good place to catch mussels. There are many fresh mussels, which can be cooked immediately.
Features of scenic spots
There are bicycle rental shops in the buildings on the side of Meiwo wharf and around xiangshihui road. The bicycle roads in Meiwo District extend in all directions. Most of them are flat paths, and the signs in the village are very clear. You might as well try cycling here. Along Meiwo rural affairs meeting road, there are crisscross paths and a green scene. This is the village of Meiwo. Luditang, daditang, Hengtang and Baiyin township are all here. The new village houses, mixed with the ancient ancestral houses, and the countryside constitute a beautiful picture. From a distance, the highest floor is Meiwo's public housing building "Yinwan village", which is a rural building with a low-density living environment that is not available in the urban area.
Population situation
The population of Meiwo is only over 10000, but the community facilities are perfect. Municipal buildings, libraries, post offices, clinics and swimming pools can be found here. If you want to experience the style of the outlying islands, you can stay at the Silver Mine Bay Hotel next to Silver Mine Bay and spend a whole day on Lantau Island. It's also a good free trip.
geographical position
Mei Wo is on Lantau Island. Lantau Island (Chinese mainland known as Tai ho Island, regarded as part of Wanshan Islands) is located in the southwest of Hongkong. It is the largest island in Hongkong, with an area of 146.75 square kilometers, 84% larger than Hongkong island. Most of Lantau Island belongs to the outlying island area, but the northern part of Lantau Island, including yin'ao, Penny's Bay, and KAP Shui Mun, belongs to the Tsuen Wan District administratively.
In the past, due to inconvenient transportation and being far away from the urban areas, many lands on Lantau Island were undeveloped. However, it has become a good place for Hong Kong people to go on holiday. With the completion of the Hong Kong Airport Core plan related to Chek Lap Kok new airport, the Tsing Ma Bridge (including the MTR Tung Chung Line and the airport express line) and the KAP Shui Mun bridge connect Lantau with the urban area, and the development of the Tung Chung new town makes it easier to get to Lantau.
Scenic Area Planning
To be renovated as "Yiqing town"
On October 23, 2006, the planning department proposed to renovate Meiwo with the concept of "Yiqing town" as the center, retain the original characteristics of the town, and inject new elements, such as waterfront promenade, in order to enhance the recreational development potential of the area. In the long run, we will consider setting up various recreational facilities to establish Mui Wo as a public holiday leisure center.
On the whole, Meiwo still retains the old appearance of the countryside, and there are many unique scenic spots, such as genglou, yinkuangdong, etc. In view of its local characteristics, the planning department proposes to renovate Meiwo with the concept of "Yiqing town". The concept aims to provide a relaxed environment for local residents and tourists to enjoy the natural scenery and rural culture of Meiwo by walking or cycling.
Keep features and add new elements
According to this concept, the original township characteristics will be retained and new elements will be injected. In the short and medium term, the planning objectives include improving the landscape of the old Mui Wo market and the waterfront of the pier, providing facilities to link various scenic spots, such as bicycle path and heritage path.
Details include: retaining the existing area of the old Mei Wo market, renovating Mei Wo Rural Council road, Mei wo Yongkou street and nearby streets to enhance their traditional features, and extending the town square to the east of Mei Wo market. The square can be used for entertainment, open-air restaurants or festival fairs. The original Yinhe garden will be redesigned to provide a landmark entrance to the town square and Meiwo old city. Around the town square, small shops will be set up, trees will be planted and recreational facilities will be added to form a vibrant square;
Seaside promenade with sea view
The existing bus terminus and bicycle parking area outside the pier will be converted into a pier square, providing recreational facilities, small shopping shops, information kiosks and small gathering and entertainment venues to create a vibrant public space; The existing two row Meiwo cooked food market should be changed into a single row restaurant with open-air seats to facilitate tourists to enjoy the sea view; besides the cooked food market, it is suggested to set up a coastal wooden corridor to connect the wharf with the old Meiwo market and provide a leisurely walk path;
The waterfront promenade extending from the wharf to the South will be built to provide high-quality recreational facilities, open-air tea house, walking path and cycling path. The existing big trees near the center of Meiwo will be reserved as landmark trees, and more trees will be planted to provide more shade rest places;
Connect scenic spots with cultural relics path
Upgrade the original bicycle path to meet the general standard, and develop it into a complete bicycle route, connecting different scenic spots, villages and docks, so as to facilitate tourists. The bicycle path will extend to the south of Meiwo, connecting the cross-country bicycle path of South Lantau to peiao, etc.; and the heritage path will connect different scenic spots, starting from the old Meiwo market, connecting Baiyin Township, yinkuangdong and yinkuangwan waterfall, and reaching daditang and luditang in the South; road signs, display boards, seats and rain shelters will be set up. The branch line will lead to butterfly mountain, and a viewing Pavilion will be built to enjoy the scenery of Meiwo. Heritage Trail will be connected with the hiking trails to Discovery Bay, Tai Ho and Phoenix trail;
The long-term goal is to set up all kinds of recreational facilities, including Yacht Club, water sports center, botanical park, nature education center, rebuild yuan's mansion for folk custom exhibition hall, reopen silver mine cave for tourism, etc., so as to establish Meiwo as a public holiday leisure center.
However, these long-term projects are preliminary concepts, and their feasibility needs to be further studied.
Olympic love
Beijing 2008 Olympic Games is coming. In order to mark this grand event of the century and Hong Kong has the honor to co host the Olympic equestrian events, the SAR government has obtained the approval of the International Olympic Committee to name the section of the mountain path from Baimang village to Meiwo "Hong Kong Olympic path" and the planting forest near the hillside of Baimang village "Olympic Forest".
The chief executive said at the opening ceremony that one of the themes of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games is "Green Olympics". The establishment of "Hong Kong Olympic trail" and "Olympic Forest" is just in line with this theme. At the same time, it can promote green life and instill environmental awareness into the public.
Connecting Baimang and Meiwo, the Hong Kong Olympic trail is about 5.6 km long, with the highest point of 227 meters. It passes through several villages with a history of more than 200 years. Baimang village, located at the starting point of Hong Kong Olympic trail, has been listed as a statutory historic site with its gate tower, wall, ancestral temple and watchtower. The Fengshui forest behind it also has the characteristics of rural areas in the new territories.
The Hong Kong Olympic trail is suitable for families to have an outing together. They can enjoy the natural environment along the way, and explore the history and culture of the village, reflecting the green Olympic and Humanistic Olympic spirit promoted by Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
Future development
According to the policy address issued in 2004, the Lantau development task force established by the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in February 2004 put forward the concept plan for Lantau development, which has undergone 20 years
