Tianwang hall is the second entrance hall of Shaolin Temple. It is also called the third hall together with the main hall and the Sutra Pavilion. This hall was originally the gate of Shaolin Temple. It was first built in Yuan Dynasty and renovated many times in Ming and Qing Dynasty. The present Tianwang hall was rebuilt from 1982 to 1983 according to the research materials provided by the China Institute of cultural relics. Its layout is still based on the original structure. The new hall is five rooms wide and two rooms deep, with front and back porches.
The Tianwang Hall of Shaolin Temple is built on the top of the mountain with double eaves. Between the eaves of the upper and lower floors, there is a wind character plaque (also known as vertical plaque) inscribed by Chu Tunan. The semi-circular platform in front of the gate is the original structure. Except for some cracks, the original components are used.
The content and position of the statues in the hall are just like the old system. In front of the hall, there are two tall statues of Vajra Dharma protectors, and in the back of the hall, there are four statues of heavenly kings.
