Place name allusion
As a folk saying goes, "ten trees are planted in front of Taiping Department". Shizi street in Suzhou is the qianheng street of the old government offices (Prince Wu Cheng and Pingjiang government office). It is also said that ten trees were planted on the street, so it is named. Shizi street used to be three connected streets. The east of Wangxing bridge is called tiancizhuang, the section from Wangxing bridge to Fenghuang street is called yanyaqian, and the section from Fenghuang street to Renmin Street is called Shizi street. Since the "Cultural Revolution" in 1966, it has been called Hongqi East Road. It was changed to its present name in 1980.
Tianci village was named jiangjiaxiang in ancient times. Han Yong, the right servant of the Ministry of war in the Ming Dynasty, built Fengxi thatched cottage here, also known as tiancizhuang. The place was then called hanyaqian. In the Qianlong period of Qing Dynasty, it was named Tianci village. In the late Qing Dynasty, the American Methodist Church came here to establish Soochow University, Boxi hospital, and St. John's church.
Yanya was formerly known as jiqingsi lane. In the Ming Dynasty, it was the hometown of Yan Na, a great scholar.
Shizi street is named for its ancient catalpa trees. The ancients took Zi as the head of a hundred trees and called it the king of trees. The governor of Jizhou in the Eastern Han Dynasty should be honest, upright and selfless, and he should believe in rewards and punishments. After the event, his mother was filial. It is said that catalpa trees were born in the hall, so there is a saying that "the prefect should plant ten catalpa trees in front of the office.". This street is located in front of Zicheng official office in ancient times, so it has this name.
