Located at danghekou in Dunhuang City, 36 km away from Dunhuang City in the north, the dam site has a drainage area of 16600 square kilometers, with an average annual runoff of 293 million cubic meters. The reservoir is equipped with two hydrological stations, danghekou station and dangchengwan station. Danghekou station is located at the dam site of the reservoir, 75 km away from the dam site, which is the only flood reporting station in the upstream of the reservoir; Aksai station and wukuomiao station are also set up Aksai rainfall station is located in the Gobi confluence area 60km south of the reservoir, and wugemiao rainfall station is located 58km upstream of the dam site.

After the construction of Danghe reservoir was started in 1970, due to the complex site conditions, it was decided by the provincial government that the second stage of the first stage should be built at a dam height of 46 meters, with a storage capacity of 15 million cubic meters and a designed crest elevation of 1421.5 meters. The reservoir is designed according to the 50 year return period flood, and the 500 year return period flood is checked at the flood level of 1418.5m, which was completed and put into operation in 1975.

The project consists of main dam, auxiliary dam, temporary spillway, water conveyance tunnel and power station. After subsidence, the lowest elevation of the main dam is 1421.3m, the lowest elevation of the core wall is 1420.69m, and the lowest elevation of the auxiliary dam is 1420.90m. The lowest point elevation of the core wall is 1420.49m. The temporary spillway is located on the right side of the auxiliary dam. It is an open wide crested weir with a width of 10.5m, an elevation of 1415.7m and a designed maximum discharge of 118m3 / s. The water conveyance tunnel is located on the left side of the main dam. It is a reinforced concrete pressure tunnel with an inner diameter of 2.8 meters. The entrance is equipped with a maintenance flat steel gate, and the exit is controlled by a cone valve with a diameter of 1.7 meters. The maximum discharge is 32 cubic meters per second. The power tunnel bifurcates from the main tunnel with an inner diameter of 3 meters. There are 3 installed units with a total capacity of 3750 kW. The diversion flow of a single unit is 3.6 cubic meters per second.
