The school was founded in 1981, formerly known as Guilin high school. In 1998, it was renamed "Guilin No.18 Middle School". In May 2003, it became a model high school in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

In June 2018, the Junior High School Department of the school resumed running.

As of September 2019, the junior middle school has two campuses, and the senior middle school has one campus. The Hengtang campus and the east ring campus of the junior middle school are set up with 36 teaching classes of three grades. The east ring campus of the junior middle school covers an area of more than 70 mu, with more than 600 junior high school students. The Hengtang campus of the junior middle school covers an area of 120 mu, with more than 1260 students. There are 285 full-time teachers in junior and senior middle schools.

In October 1981, with the approval of the people's Government of the autonomous region, the school was established as "Guilin high school".

On September 24, 2013, the school of Educational Sciences of Guangxi Normal University signed an agreement with the 18th Middle School of Guilin City, deciding to cooperate in the implementation of the "school innovation and development project" and establish a new Education Alliance.

On December 10, 2014, the listing ceremony of "excellent student source base of Central South University" was held.

In July 2017, the school cooperated with Guilin Dezhi foreign language school (Guilin No.3 middle school) to run a school. The two schools integrated management and set up two high school classes.

From 2006 to 2011, there were more than 100 students who entered the top ten single subjects of Guangxi college entrance examination, accounting for nearly half of Guilin.
