Celebrity statue
Pierre de Coubertin statue settled in Xiamen Sports Center
The bronze statue of "father of the Olympic Games - Coubertin", which was returned to Xiamen by the International Olympic Committee, has been placed in the flower bed at the west gate of the Sports Center Stadium. He Zhenliang and Wu Jingguo, members of the International Olympic Committee, attended the opening ceremony of the sculpture at 9 am on March 18, 2007.
As for the location of the bronze statue of Coubertin, our city had a special discussion at the Marathon Organizing Committee meeting. As the most important place for citizens to keep fit, the sports center was finally determined as the location of the statue. Coubertin's head sculpture, 155 cm high and 130 cm wide, is a masterpiece created by two famous Chinese artists, Wang Shaojun and Wu Guojun. It won the first prize of China Sports Art Exhibition in Beijing and has been collected in the Museum of the International Olympic Committee since 1995. Through the image of "the father of the Olympics -- Pierre de Coubertin", this sculpture symbolizes the close relationship between the Olympic movement and China, especially Xiamen city.
Allusions to statues
There is a story about the statue of Coubertin settled in Xiamen. On March 25, 2005, the "never-ending" marathon group sculpture composed of 99 sculptures appeared on Xiamen Island Road, which is known as "the most beautiful coastal track in the world". Mr. Wu Jingguo, member of the International Olympic Committee, praised the sculpture and brought it to Lausanne, Switzerland. After careful study, the International Olympic Committee decided to select two pieces for collection, and the president Mr. Rogge personally selected two of them, which were recast and sent to the International Olympic Committee headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, as the collection of the Olympic Museum. On April 25, 2006, the donation ceremony was held at 2:00 p.m. Swiss time at the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee. Mr. Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee, spoke highly of the artistic value of the two Xiamen marathon sculptures. In his speech at the donation ceremony, Rogge announced that the IOC would also present a sculpture to Xiamen to express its gratitude for Xiamen's hospitality and good wishes to Xiamen and China. After research, the International Olympic Committee decided to present a statue of Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic movement.
Born in France, Pierre de Coubertin was president of the International Olympic Committee from 1896 to 1925. He advocated the Olympic spirit all his life and was known as "the father of modern Olympics". He once published his famous poem "Ode to sports". In 1913, it designed the emblem and flag for the International Olympic Committee.
