Puji temple in Beitou
Puji temple in Beitou is a Buddhist temple located in Beitou District, Taipei City, Taiwan. According to the Taiwan Buddhist treasure book published by the minde Photo Gallery (Taipei) in 1941, both the Puji temple and the Linji Huguo Chan temple, both of which are the Buddhist strongholds of the MIAOXIN Temple School of Linji sect in Taipei. During the period of Japanese occupation in Taiwan, many of his letters were sent by the Ministry of Railways staff of the Transportation Bureau of the governor's office of Taiwan, so he named them "Tiezhen yuan" after the posthumous title of Mr. Murakami Zhangyi, the head of the transportation department of the Ministry of railways, and set up a "monument of Murakami Zhangyi Weng" in the temple.
history
Puji temple in Beitou is a rare Buddhist temple of shinyan sect in Japan in Taiwan. It was first built in 1905 by the railway workers at that time,
Therefore, it is also called tiezhenyuan. Tang shouguanyin is worshipped in the temple. People in Beitou regard this Buddhist temple as a hot spring Guardian temple. The Buddhist temple adopts Japanese style, and its plane layout is well preserved, including the main hall and the Abbot's residence. They all present the beauty of simple, elegant, quiet and solemn Buddhist temples, which is rare in Taiwan. Japanese style is adopted in the Buddhist temple, which is a mixture of three types: Japanese traditional style, Buddhist style and Zen style. The main hall is a single eaves Xieshan style, with three bays in width and three bays in depth, nearly square. The roof of the temple protrudes forward to become the entrance porch, which is a common form in Edo period in Japan. The main hall and Abbot's house all present the beauty of simple, elegant, quiet and solemn Buddhist temples. Inside the main hall, the ground is lifted up to make it easy to kneel down to worship the Buddha. Curved rainbow beams and bell shaped windows can be seen at the entrance of the temple, which is simple and unsophisticated. The main hall is all made of high-grade cypress wood, and carved with bucket and rainbow beams. The windows are bell shaped, which is also characteristic. In addition to the main hall, the stone Buddha statue of Tang Shou Guanyin and the stele of Zhangyi Weng in Murakami are also of great historical value.
Puji temple in Beitou still maintains a Japanese worship ceremony. It worships the Bodhisattvas in the temple first, and then worships the heavenly ancestors outside, which is different from the traditional way of worship in Taiwan temples. There is a pavilion beside the main hall of Puji temple, in which stands a stone Buddha statue of King Tibetans Bodhisattva. On the back of the stone Buddha statue, there is a big character "zhengxinmiaogue". It is suspected that it is Tang shouguanyin referred to by Beitou hot spring magazine in 1909. However, there is another small character on the back of the stone Buddha statue, which is covered with cement and is not clear. It seems that the stone statue was moved after 1930.
The front courtyard of Puji temple is full of Camellia. It goes up the stone footpath beside the hot spring road. The main hall on the front is dedicated to Maitreya Bodhisattva and Guanyin Bodhisattva, which is very solemn and pure. There is a Chinese style Guanyin Pavilion on the right, which is dedicated to a stone Buddha in the form of Bodhisattva king of Tibet. It should be Tang Shou Guanyin carved during the Japanese occupation. Why is Guanyin Bodhisattva called Tang Shou Guanyin? Tang Shou is the hot spring, and Tang Shou is the meaning of hot spring patron saint. The concept of patron saint is different from that of Bodhisattva, but it shows the importance of Guanyin belief in East Asian society
In 1949, the 17th Ganzhu living Buddha of Gelug Sect of Tibetan Buddhism settled here and renamed "tiezhenyuan" as "Puji Temple".
In 1969, master Xingru of Pure Land Sect succeeded the abbot of Puji temple. In 1989, master LIANHANG succeeded the abbot.
The architecture of Puji temple is quite simple, without double eaves and three entrances. It is a single eaves Xieshan architecture. The width of the temple is also smaller than that of ordinary Buddhist temples, which is about three bays. The depth is only three bays. It is a small square Buddhist temple, located on Wenquan road beside the new Beitou MRT station. Due to the high terrain, visitors have to climb two flights of stairs, which are open until 5 p.m.
There is an old camphor tree beside the statue of dizang Buddha (known as "zi'an dizang" during the Japanese occupation) worshipped outside the temple.
Beside the main gate of Puji temple, there are bell shaped windows with special design. The building materials used are all high-grade cypress, which are well maintained. You can see the exquisite sculptures of Dou Gong and Hong Liang in the entrance porch.
