The basic idea of this sutra is to save the dead parents with the merits of the monk. Due to the emphasis on filial piety, it is highly valued by Chinese people. On July 15, the fourth year of Datong (538), Emperor Wu of Liang Dynasty held the first Yulan basin meeting in Tongtai temple. By the Tang Dynasty, it was popular among the people. Up to now, the Yulan basin club has become a part of Chinese folk custom.

With the popularity of the Yulan basin society, the story of Mulian saving his mother spread widely among the people. On behalf of this popularity, it is the popularity of disguise (picture of Buddhist sutra story) and Bianwen. In Tang Dynasty, there were more than one people who painted Mulian's disguise. In terms of Bianwen, there were 16 Bianwen about Mulian saving his mother found in Dunhuang. Among them, s.2614, which is collected by the British Museum in London, is the first and last complete, and is included in the 85th volume of Dazheng collection.

These Bianwen were written by the Tang Dynasty, and they are the earliest of all the Mulian operas in the past dynasties. In addition, in Bianwen, the mother of Mulian goes through three evil ways: Hell, hungry ghost and animal. He can describe all kinds of sufferings in the three evil ways. In the time of emperor Zhenzong of Song Dynasty (998-1022), it was forbidden to speak and sing Bianwen. But the story of Mulian saving his mother did not disappear. There are three volumes (one hundred volumes) of "Mu Lian saves his mother from hell" by Zheng Zhizhen in Ming Dynasty, which is one of the most magnificent legends in Yuan and Ming Dynasty.
