Hu Shi's former residence is located in Shangzhuang village, Jixi. It is a typical Hui Style ancient building, with small green tiles, horse head wall, three bays and two floors. Door cover, door tower, water mill, brick carving. There are patios in the vestibule, wing rooms on both sides, tongzhuanlou upstairs and the main hall downstairs. The back door is the inner court, and the railings and partitions are exquisitely carved. A pair of lotus fairies on the beam support are lifelike. The doors and windows are decorated with orchid carving boards, which are from Hu Guobin, the mold making teacher of hukai Wenmo village. It reflects Hu Shi's strong local feeling and style of "I come from the mountains and bring orchid grass". It was turned into an nunnery. Hu Shi's former residence is located in the middle of Shangzhuang village, covering an area of 1134 square meters. There are four Hui style buildings in the late Qing Dynasty, which are the first, second, third and fourth exhibition halls respectively. The first hall is close to the gate of the courtyard (East). It used to be the property of Hu Shi's elder brother, whose descendants have been living here. In 1997, according to the requirements of the State Administration of cultural relics, the county came forward to purchase it. After renovation, the county displayed the photos and patterns of "overview of the former residence", "life of Hu Shi's parents" and "Hu Shi's nine-year hometown education". Hu Shi's former residence, the second hall, was built by Hu Shi's father Hu Tiehua. The former residence is a two-story and two-way structure. It is a typical Hui Style Architecture in the late Qing Dynasty. It has both historical and artistic values, especially the dependence of "orchid board". It covers an area of 270 square meters. In his former residence, Hu Shi spent his childhood; in 1917, he returned to his hometown to marry Jiang Dongxiu, and then went back to his hometown to mourn for his mother for 11 years. Hu Shi's former residence is one of the most important objects in the study of his childhood life, learning and emotional pursuit. The former residence is a gallery. The fourth Hall of the former residence is the living room, which used to be a sedan chair. After the renovation, some photos of Hu Shi's friends at home and abroad are displayed; the white jade statue of Han Dynasty and the evening couplet given by Chiang Kai Shek: "the model of old morality in the new culture, the model of new ideas in the old ethics." There is also Hu Shi's famous saying "strive to be a camel."

Hu Shi's former residence is divided into two parts. One is located in Shangzhuang village, Jixi, which is a typical Hui Style ancient building with small green tiles, horse head wall, three Bay and two floors. In May 1926, a small western style house was rented at 49 jisifei Road, West Shanghai.
Introduction to scenic spots
Hu Shi's former residence was built {1877 ~ 1880} from the third year to the sixth year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty. It was built by Hu Tiehua, the father of Mr. Hu Shi (official name: Hu Chuan, formerly named Shoushan or Shan Shan, Tiehua was named by himself).

In front of the gate and in the main hall are two gold lettered plaques with black background, which are inscribed by the famous calligrapher Sha Menghai. The furnishings in the hall are as old as before. In the room where Mr. Hu Shi used to get married, there was a "Moon Palace bed" painted with red lacquer and gold. It was rich and elegant, decorated with Hui Style and carved with various operas, flowers and birds. A small red lacquer box with the word "Gaoming" engraved on the top of the bed forehead. It is a relic of Hu tie Hua, Hu Shi's father. On the right side of the bed, a Hu Tiehua sword was hung. Hu Shi's family letters are displayed in the two rooms, as well as many calligraphy and paintings donated by celebrities in modern society.
Turning around the main hall is the back hall, with a small patio in the middle. On the small hall, there is a large red gold plaque with the four characters "Chijie Xuanwei". It was given by the national government when Hu Shi was the ambassador of the United States.
