brief introduction
Yuhan hall is located on Guangji road outside changmen gate in Suzhou. It is the former residence of Wu Yipeng, the Minister of the Ministry of Li in Ming Dynasty
With a long history, it is the largest ancient architectural complex in Suzhou. The ancient building is divided into three roads and five entrances, which gather all kinds of room forms in China, such as hall, hall, building, pavilion, studio, etc. Yuhan hall is the main hall of Wu Yipeng's former residence. The architectural features of Yuhan hall are obvious. Its carved beams and painted buildings all show the cultural and artistic features of Ming Dynasty. In 1982, it was listed as a cultural relic protection unit in Suzhou. In December 2011, yuhantang was announced as a cultural relic protection unit in Jiangsu Province.
good reputation
Under the condition of no management for a long time, Yuhan hall became dilapidated. The Suzhou municipal government decided to develop tourism and listed Yuhan hall as the first renovation object. More than 500 construction workers and skilled craftsmen started the renovation work of Yuhan hall. They injected modern art concept into Yuhan hall, added fashion elements to its classical style, and made Yuhan hall radiate vitality again. The rebuilt Yuhan hall has been welcomed by many tourists and won the reputation of "Shantang senior club". It has become a famous scenic spot in Suzhou and even in China.
New look
Wu Yipeng's former residence after repair
There are four roads and five entrances in the building community. In addition to the main hall, Yuhan hall is a Ming Dynasty legacy, the rest are built in the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China.
The East Road building is Taohuawu woodcut New Year pictures studio. This is not only a comprehensive display of the Taohuawu woodcut New Year picture, which originated in Shantang and is a world cultural heritage application project, but also a demonstration of the complex process of making this picture.
The middle road building is the location of Yuhan hall, the main hall of Wu Yipeng's residence. Yuhan hall is the only Ming Dynasty building outside Suzhou. Its name means "gentleman is better than jade". It compares jade to the moral standard of self-cultivation, reflecting the noble moral standard of the owner. The building of Yuhan hall is tall and spacious. It is three rooms wide and nine rooms deep (excluding one corridor room in front). It is flat as a beam frame. The front is Fanxuan. The column base is carved blue stone drum pier. The foot of the wall is corrugated carved brick. The architectural style is very grand. After visiting Yuhan hall, Dr. Li Zhengdao, a famous Chinese American scientist and Nobel Laureate in physics, was very appreciative of this and happily wrote the inscription of "cultural relic is new, Yuhan is in the hall".
The Shantang culture museum built on West 2nd road can be regarded as an accurate copy of the ancient Shantang. The museum is divided into six parts: a panoramic view of the mountain pond, local customs, elegant calligraphy, official families, merchants' scale collection and red sleeve sideburns. With the form of rich cultural and historical atmosphere as the main theme, the museum truly reproduces the historical changes and cultural customs of the 1700 mountain pond by using modern exhibition techniques and high-tech phantom imaging methods. All the pictures and objects in the museum are very precious. In particular, the largest "phantom imaging" in China, which costs millions of dollars, has a unique way of display and interesting plot, which makes people feel the hustle and bustle of "the first street of China" in just eight minutes.
Xi'er road of the complex used to be the embroidery studio of Mr. Ren Fuxian, the top master of Suzhou embroidery, and it is the information exhibition room of the protective restoration project of the mountain pond.
Wu Yipeng's former residence is divided into two parts: the East and the West. The whole residence includes various types of Chinese ancient buildings: hall, hall, building, pavilion, studio, etc. As the main hall, Yuhan hall is 16 meters wide and 14 meters deep with six purlins. The East and West Gables are sugarcane ridges. The walls are pasted with fine bricks, and the wainscots are covered with blue stones. But after hundreds of years, the ancient building has been in a state of no management. Some dangerous structures have been demolished. After the closure of the teahouse in the ancient house, the whole building complex is scarred and in danger. Suzhou city regards the restoration of Yuhan hall as a practical project of the government in 2003. In terms of the scale of restoration and partial reconstruction, it is rare in the history of Suzhou after liberation.
There are many ancient buildings bidding for the yuhantang restoration project. Among them, Taihu ancient architecture Co., Ltd., the successor of "Xiangshan Gang" and the family of craftsmen, won the bid. Xue Lingen, the general manager of the company, once built Suzhou gardens for Nagasaki, Japan, and was rated as an excellent project at that time. Xue Fuxin, the chief engineer, is one of the builders of "Mingxuan" in New York. The building is also the first Suzhou garden exported to the United States by China It is a model of state garden model. In order to ensure the quality and quantity to complete the repair task, three teams of big wood, three teams of carving, two teams of brick and four teams of water were invested in the construction, with a total of more than 500 people working day and night. In the process of repairing Yuhan hall, the timber scale and architectural proportion are appropriate, and the selected fir is used. The production process is based on the idea of repairing the old as before, and the Ming Dynasty architectural style of "neat and soft, elegant and bright, simple and neat" is fully maintained during the construction. Even the flower patterns carved in each place are carefully manipulated to make them lifelike. According to historical records, Xue Fuxin, a master gardener, used traditional gardening techniques to rebuild a real interesting garden by using an abandoned warehouse in the northwest corner of the ancient house base. There are many scenic spots, such as Meilin Chunxiao, Yuxi Fenghe, Jinqiu Daiyue, Shuying Pavilion and so on.
The restored Yuhan hall has been redesigned by professional art colleges and universities, and many modern aesthetic senses have been integrated into it. At the same time, due to the modern decoration behavior may cause damage to the ancient building itself, the construction is very careful, not to use a nail. The whole building is divided into several different display areas to show the Wu style. There are Shantang Culture Museum displaying the miniature landscape, historical materials and old things of laoshantang, renhuixian Suzhou embroidery exhibition room, Taohuawu woodcut New Year picture museum with strong local flavor, etc. There is also China's first Chengni inkstone, which has more than six square meters. It is more than enough to set tables and banquets on it. Next to it, there is a giant pen hanging like rafters beside a gold pillar.
The "Western scenery" on the upper floor of Yuhan hall is very popular with tourists, where the largest phantom film in China is shown regularly. In the film, the ancient Qilishan Tanghe street and adjacent to the merchants gathered in the market are vivid, crisp, the sound of Hawking, the string Ding Dong Tanci, and the euphemistic Wu dialect. The decoration of the main hall Yuhan hall is very artistic. The traditional cultural concept is interpreted with modern artistic symbols. The means of expression and decoration style are clear and concise. It is positioned as a place for holding important conferences and business activities. Some people call it "Shantang senior club". I.M. Pei and Zheng Dao Li were full of praise after visiting the renovated Yuhan hall. In addition, yuhantang has joined Gangzhou guild hall catering Co., Ltd., becoming another high-level catering club after Gangzhou guild hall.

The Ming style carvings on the buttress of the maple arch and the mountain fog clouds on the ridge are simple and round, and even the patterns of flowers and wreaths carved under each beam are extremely fine. The building area of the whole Yuhan hall is nearly 5000 square meters. On the basis of maintaining its original style, it highlights the literary implication of the mountains and the water, so that it is not only "similar in shape", but also "similar in spirit". According to the characteristics of its topography, spring, summer, autumn and winter scenic spots are set up. The scenery of the four seasons has its own wonderful, poetic and picturesque.
