Temple plants
There are many kinds of plants, rare tree species and flowers in the courtyard of Boao temple, among which five bodhi trees are more than 100 years old. Bodhi means "consciousness". Sakyamuni realized the Tao under the bodhi tree, which is regarded as the symbol of Buddha.
The five ancient trees form a "five-star Bodhi" layout, which symbolizes the "one flower and five leaves" in the heyday of Zen Buddhism. (the so-called "five leaves" refer to the five sects of Fuyang, Linji, caodong, Yunmen and fayan). Bring cool and holy atmosphere to the temple.
There is also "manna Pavilion" built in the temple. Boao temple is built on a small hill called "aoling". In the past, there were four families living here, sharing an ancient well. Local people called it "Guanyin well". It is said that it was carved by a drop of dew from Guanyin.
During the festival of Guanyin, the villagers come to fetch water and sprinkle it on the hall or arrange flowers for the Buddha. In September 1973, a huge typhoon hit Boao, houses were destroyed and survived. After moving away from here, Gujing dried up. In the spring of 2003, after the construction of Boao Temple broke ground, the well, which has been dry for 20 years, miraculously erupted a new spring.
