Wuhan University, formerly known as the self strengthening school founded by Zhang Zhidong, governor of Huguang in the late Qing Dynasty, was renamed "national Wuhan University" in 1928. Wuhan University is close to the East Lake and encircles Luojia mountain. The campus is covered with green trees. The late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China
On November 29, 1893, Zhang Zhidong, governor of Huguang, played "the film of setting up self strengthening school" to Emperor Guangxu of Qing Dynasty. He thought that "the country of gaiwen classics is based on self-improvement" and "the way of self-improvement is to educate talents first", so he chose the word "self-improvement". This new-style college is located at the entrance of Dachao street, sanfoge, Wuchang, Hubei Province.
At the beginning of its establishment, there were four branches: dialect, arithmetic, Gezhi and business, which opened the prelude of modern Chinese higher education.
In 1896, the school of mining and chemistry was merged into the self-improvement school, which increased the education of nature and engineering. Dialect gradually expanded to English, French, German, Russian, Eastern (Japanese) five languages.
In October 1902, Ziqiang school moved to dongchangkou, Wuchang, and changed its name to dialect school. Courses include geography, history, arithmetic, public law, negotiation, etc.
On the eve of the 1911 Revolution, dialect schools were forced to suspend their education because of the shortage of educational funds. In October of the same year, the Wuchang Uprising broke out, the Qing Dynasty quickly perished, the dialect schools could not immediately resume, and the running of Wuhan University was interrupted.
In 1913, after the establishment of the Ministry of education of the Beiyang government, it planned to set up six higher normal schools throughout the country, and decided to rebuild the national Wuchang higher normal school on the basis of the school buildings, books and teachers of the original dialect school.
In 1922, the four departments were changed into eight departments, namely, the Department of philosophy of education, the Department of Chinese, the Department of English, the Department of mathematics, the Department of physics and chemistry, the Department of historical sociology, the Department of biology, and the Department of geology.
In September 1923, national Wuchang Normal University was renamed National Wuchang Normal University.
In 1924, national Wuchang Normal University was renamed National Wuchang University.
In 1926, national Wuchang University merged with national Wuchang Business University, Hubei Provincial Medical University, Hubei legislative University, Hubei Provincial liberal arts university and private Wuchang Zhonghua university to form national Wuchang Sun Yat sen University (also known as National Second Sun Yat sen University).
In 1928, based on the former national Wuchang Sun Yat sen University, the Nanjing National Government rebuilt the national Wuhan University with four colleges of Arts, law, science and engineering.
In February 1929, jurist Wang Shijie became the first official president of national Wuhan University. He believed that national Wuhan University could not be satisfied with its four colleges, and proposed to make it a ten thousand people university with six colleges of Arts, law, science, engineering, agriculture and medicine.
In March 1930, the first phase of the new campus project of national Wuhan University was officially started.
In March 1932, the school moved from dongchangkou to Luojiashan new school.

In 1934, Wuhan University opened the first swimming class for female college students in China, which ended the history of forbidding female college students to swim in feudal society and caused a sensation all over the country. In the same year, Wuhan University was praised by the Ministry of education of the Republic of China for its outstanding achievements in physical education, and was awarded the title of the then director of physical education and health as the executor of the physical education program of missionary university, Tsinghua University, Nankai University, Wuhan University and other universities.
In 1935, the school started postgraduate education.
In 1936, the University established an agricultural college, which developed into a comprehensive university with 5 colleges, 15 departments and 2 research institutes, including arts, law, science, engineering and agriculture.
In 1937, national Wuhan University, together with National Central University, National Tsinghua University, National Peking University and national Zhejiang University, conducted unified entrance examination, thus becoming one of the "five famous universities of the Republic of China".
In 1938, due to the outbreak of the Wuhan war, national Wuhan University was forced to move westward to Leshan, Sichuan Province to continue its education, and the agricultural college was incorporated into the National Central University.
After the fall of Wuhan, the Japanese army turned the campus of Wuhan University into its original headquarters.
On August 15, 1945, Japan announced its unconditional surrender. On September 1 of the same year, the national Wuhan University set up the restoration Committee.
In 1946, Wuhan University restored its agricultural college, established a medical college, and moved back to Luojiashan, Wuchang, with 6 colleges, 21 departments and 8 research institutes.
In 1947, the school established a medical college and its affiliated hospital, forming six colleges, 21 departments and 8 research institutes.
After the founding of the people's Republic of China
When Wuhan was liberated in 1949, national Wuhan University was taken over by the Communist Party of China and renamed Wuhan University.
In 1950, the Department of water conservancy of Hunan University was transferred to Wuhan University and combined with the Department of water conservancy of civil engineering to establish the Department of water conservancy. The Medical College of Wuhan University was separated from Wuhan University and merged with the Medical College of Tongji University in Shanghai to form Tongji Medical College of Central South China (now Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of science and Technology).
In 1952, the water conservancy departments of Nanchang University and Henan University were transferred to Wuhan University and merged with the water conservancy department of Wuhan University to form the Water Conservancy College; the Agricultural College of Wuhan University was separated from Wuhan University and merged with Hubei Agricultural College to form Huazhong Agricultural College (now Huazhong Agricultural University); the Department of philosophy was merged with Peking University, and the Department of mining and metallurgy was transferred to Central South University of mining and Metallurgy (now Zhongnan University).
In November 1952, the Central People's government appointed Li Da, a famous educator, as president of Wuhan University. Li Da has presided over the administration of the University for 13 years, and has become the president with the longest term of office in the history of Wuhan University.
In 1953, the major of civil engineering and civil engineering surveying in the Civil Engineering Department of Wuhan University and the major of radio broadcasting and communication and telecommunication group in the electrical engineering department were merged into South China Institute of Technology (now South China University of Technology)
The Department of civil engineering of Wuhan University was incorporated into Central South College of civil engineering and Architecture (now Hunan University); the Department of mechanical engineering of Wuhan University was separated from Wuhan University and participated in the establishment of Huazhong Institute of Technology (now Huazhong University of science and Technology); the English section of foreign languages Department of Wuhan University was incorporated into Sun Yat sen University.
In 1954, the Institute of water conservancy was separated from Wuhan University and established Wuhan University of water conservancy (later renamed Wuhan University of water conservancy and electric power).
In 1956, the Department of philosophy was restored.
In 1958, the Department of foreign languages was restored.
In 1960, it was designated as a national key university by the CPC Central Committee.
In 1966, Xiangyang Branch was established in Longzhong, Xiangyang, northwest Hubei.
In 1970, Shayang branch was established in Jingzhou, Hubei Province.
In 1978, there were three new departments of science, namely, Department of computer science, Department of space physics, Department of Virology and Department of molecular biology.
In May 1980, Wuhan University and the French government delegation signed the "minutes of talks" in Wuhan. Wuhan University became the only designated university to cooperate with its French counterparts at that time, which opened the prelude of cooperation and exchanges between Wuhan University and relevant French departments, institutions and organizations in various fields.
In July 1981, Liu Daoyu took the post of president of Wuhan University. He carried out a series of reform measures in teaching and management system, and vigorously carried out cooperation and exchanges with world-famous universities, which ushered in the first period of rapid development after the cultural revolution. Wuhan University is also the first university in China to implement the credit system reform since 1978.
In November 1981, with the approval of the State Council, the University became one of the first batch of doctoral and master degree awarding units in China.

In 1984, it became one of the first universities to set up graduate schools in China, and established the school of economics and management and the school of Library and information science.
