Jiuzhaigou is located in Jiuzhaigou County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. It is located in the transition zone of Qinghai Tibet Plateau, Western Sichuan Plateau and mountainous areas to Sichuan Basin. It is more than 300 kilometers south of Chengdu City. It is a valley with a depth of more than 50 kilometers, covering a total area of 64297 hectares and a forest coverage rate of more than 80%. Because there are nine Tibetan villages in the valley, such as Shuzheng village, Heye village and zechawa village, which are located in this alpine lake group.
The main protected objects of Jiuzhaigou National Nature Reserve are giant panda, golden monkey and other rare animals and their natural ecological environment. There are 74 species of rare plants under state protection, 18 species of animals under state protection, and abundant fossils and ancient glacial landforms.
"Jiuzhaigou returns without looking at the water" is a true interpretation of Jiuzhaigou scenery. Spring, waterfall, river, beach 108 Haizi, constitute a colorful yaochi jade basin. Changhai, Jianyan, NuoRiLang, Shuzheng, zharu and Heihai are six landscapes, which are distributed in "Y" shape. Cuihai, Diebao, Cailin, Xuefeng, Cangqing and Lanbing are known as the "six wonders". The magical Jiuzhai village is known as "fairy tale world" and "king of waterscape".
Affected by the earthquake, Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area stopped receiving tourists from August 9, 2017.

Historical evolution
For thousands of years, Jiuzhaigou has been hidden in the mountains of Northwest Sichuan Plateau, and human activities have been insignificant. The Tibetan people in this area are almost isolated from the world and live a life of self-sufficiency in agriculture and animal husbandry. Due to the high mountains and long road, Jiuzhaigou has always been little known.
In 1975, a working group of the Ministry of agriculture, forestry and Fisheries of the people's Republic of China made a comprehensive investigation of Jiuzhaigou and concluded that Jiuzhaigou not only contains rich and precious animal and plant resources, but also is a rare scenic spot in the world. In the same year, Professor Wu Zhonglun, a famous forester, made a comprehensive investigation of Jiuzhaigou. He was on the scene, full of emotion: "I have been to several countries in Europe and the United States, and I have never seen such wonderful natural scenery, which must be well protected." he immediately informed the provincial forestry department and wrote to the Sichuan provincial government. Provincial Forestry Department immediately issued a document to Nanping County Forestry Bureau: "Jiuzhaigou chawa, rizegou 200 meters away can be felled.". This is the earliest measure taken by the forestry department to protect Jiuzhaigou.
In 1977, the investigation team of rare animal resources in Sichuan Province wrote the investigation report of rare animal resources in Sichuan Province, which suggested that Baihe Nature Reserve in Nanping County should be expanded to Jiuzhaigou area.
In August 1978, Chengdu Institute of biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences proposed the necessity of establishing a nature reserve in Jiuzhaigou, which attracted great attention of Sichuan provincial Party committee. On November 30, the relevant departments ordered to stop logging in Jiuzhaigou. On December 15, 1978, the State Council approved the "report on strengthening the protection and domestication of giant pandas" issued by the State Forestry Administration by the State Development (1978) No. 256 document, and approved the establishment of the Management Office of Jiuzhaigou Nature Reserve in Nanping County. In 1978, the State Council issued document No.34 (1978), which stipulated that Jiuzhaigou was designated as a natural scenery reserve with an area of 620 square kilometers.
In 1979, two forest farms in Jiuzhaigou moved out. In the same year, according to the spirit of the "notice on strengthening the construction of nature reserves" (CGF 36) issued by Sichuan Provincial Revolutionary Committee, Jiuzhaigou Nature Reserve Management Office of Nanping County, Sichuan Province was established.
In 1982, Guofa (1982) No. 136 approved the notice of the urban and rural construction and environment departments for examining and approving the first batch of national key scenic spots, and designated Nanping Jiuzhaigou as a scenic spot.
In 1983, "Management Office of Jiuzhaigou Nature Reserve in Nanping County, Sichuan Province" was renamed "Management Office of Jiuzhaigou Nature Reserve in Nanping County, Sichuan Province". In the same year, the provincial government decided by CFF (1983) No. 168 that Jiuzhaigou Nature Reserve and scenic spots should be managed by the "Management Office of Jiuzhaigou Nature Reserve in Nanping, Sichuan Province", which is at the level of district section and directly led by Nanping County.
In 1984, the State Council designated Jiuzhaigou as one of the first batch of national key scenic spots in accordance with the National Development (1984) No. 136 document. Accordingly, the Administration Bureau of Jiuzhaigou scenic spot in Nanping County was established, and Jiuzhaigou was officially opened to the outside world.
In 1985, Jiuzhaigou tourism company was established to manage tourism activities in a unified way.
On January 20, 1987, the Ministry of urban and rural development and protection of the people's Republic of China (87) No. 24 approved the overall planning of Jiuzhaigou, with a scenic area of 720 square kilometers and a peripheral protection zone of 600 square kilometers. Since then, the construction of Jiuzhaigou has been on the right track.
In 1989, Jiuzhaigou town was established, forming three brands of management office, Management Bureau and town government, and a set of leading bodies to manage Jiuzhaigou in a unified way. On April 20 of the same year, Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area Administration Bureau joined the China Association of scenic areas.
On December 14, 1992, Jiuzhaigou was listed in the world natural heritage list with the approval of the 16th session of the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO, thus becoming a natural heritage site with world significance and outstanding value, which needs to be jointly protected by the whole world.
In 1993, a management system with two brands and one team was formed.
In July 1994, the Ministry of forestry confirmed Jiuzhaigou as a national nature reserve with the document of linhanhuzi (1994) No. 174, aiming at protecting the giant panda, golden monkey and other rare animals and their natural ecological environment.
On September 14, 1995, Jiuzhaigou joined the network of man and biosphere reserves in China and was listed in the recommended list of man and biosphere reserves in the world.
On October 29, 1997, Jiuzhaigou joined the World Biosphere Reserve Network and became one of the contents of the global scientific program on the relationship between human and environment initiated by UNESCO.
On May 26, 1998, UNESCO and the Chinese Academy of Sciences issued the "World Biosphere Reserve" certificate for Jiuzhaigou Nature Reserve. On November 7 of the same year, the Jiuzhaigou Management Committee was established, which was mainly led by the state and county leaders.
In March 2000, according to the requirements of the document (2000) No. 131 issued by the State Forestry Administration, the Management Office of Jiuzhaigou National Nature Reserve was renamed as the Management Office of Jiuzhaigou National Nature Reserve. In October of the same year, it was upgraded to a county-level public institution directly under the state government, implementing the management system of "taking the state as the main body and jointly managing the state and county".
On February 12, 2001, Jiuzhaigou passed the preliminary certification of "green globe'21". The Asian headquarters of green globe is located in Australia. It attracts tourism destinations and enterprises with outstanding achievements in environmental protection and eco-tourism to join the organization, and recommends them to tourists all over the world as the best tourism destinations and enterprises. On June 20, 2002, the expert group conducted a formal assessment of Jiuzhaigou.
At 21:19:46 on August 8, 2017, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 occurred in Jiuzhaigou County, Aba Prefecture, northern Sichuan Province. The epicenter was located in bimang village, 5km west of Jiuzhaigou core scenic spot.
From March 8, 2018, some landscapes in Jiuzhaigou scenic area will be reopened. The open area is the landscape along the section from the mouth of Jiuzhaigou scenic spot to Changhai, which is guided by special bus and guided by team.
On September 27, 2019, with the approval of Sichuan provincial government, Jiuzhaigou scenic area, which was closed due to earthquake and debris flow, was ready to open for trial.
