Meixi memorial archway in Zhuhai

The main building of the scenic spot is the former residence of Mr. Chen Fang, the first Chinese Consul in Hawaii at the end of the Qing Dynasty, Chen family garden, Meixi stone memorial archway and Chen Fang family cemetery. It is a tourist resort integrating celebrity Memorial, folk custom Expo, cultural relic protection, sightseeing and leisure. Meixi memorial archway in Zhuhai

Meixi memorial archway is located in Meixi village, Qianshan Town, Zhuhai City. In 1886 and 1887, Emperor Guangxu of the Qing dynasty built four memorial archways to honor Chen Fang, the first consul general of the Qing government in Honolulu, and his parents. The existing three archways stand side by side. The memorial archway is a combination of Western decoration style and traditional Chinese architectural structure. It is a rare ancient building in South China and one of the ten famous sceneries in Zhuhai.

Brief introduction of Meixi memorial archway

Zhuhai Meixi memorial archway tourist area covers an area of 120000 square meters and is located in Meixi village, chongchong, Qianshan. The whole scenic area mainly includes: Meixi archway square area, Chenfang's former residence area, Chenjia garden and tomb area and tourism service center.

There are three existing Meixi memorial archways, which were built in 1886 and 1891 respectively. They were built by Emperor Guangxu in recognition of Chen Fang and his parents for their good deeds in his hometown. The archway is made of granite with mortise and tenon structure. The top of the hall is decorated with stone bucket arch and stone appendix. Under the stone pillars are corner pillars and xumizuo. On the ridge are carved flowers, fruits, figures, auspicious animals and eight immortals. The artistic form of the central and Western walls of the stone archway, the proper mechanical structure and the exquisite carving decoration are the art treasures of stone architecture. It was designated as the cultural relic protection unit of Zhuhai City in 1987 and upgraded to the provincial cultural relic protection unit in 1989. It is the highest level cultural relic protection unit in Zhuhai City at present.

Chen Fang's former residence includes a Chen Gong ancestral hall, two big houses, a western style house, a flower hall, Meixi temple and ancestral hall, with a construction area of 2495 square meters. Stone slabs and brick floors are laid in front of the door and in the House Lane, with mango, pineapple, Magnolia, jiulixiang and other flowers and trees planted. Brick walls are built around the house, and sentry towers are set in the East and West corners, forming a Chen family manor style building. The total area of the former residence is 5742 square meters . The whole building is exquisitely constructed. Each house is built with stone wall foundation, stone steps arch, four wall round arch doors, windows decorated with gray carvings and brick carvings of various patterns, and the house is beautiful with carved beams and painted buildings. Among them, the flower hall is the most characteristic.

In front of Chen Fang's former residence, Chen Fang's garden and cemetery are 300 meters long from east to west and 240 meters wide from south to north, covering an area of 72000 square meters. On the ground, there are inscriptions of "resort Jiacheng", Chen Fang's family cemetery, six corner Pavilion, stone bridge, lotus pond, stone slab Road, and some kinds of flowers, such as nut tree, phoenix tree, Bauhinia tree and Huahui.

On this basis, according to the planning and the principle of "renovating the old as the old, replacing the new with the new", the Meixi memorial archway, Chen Fang's former residence and Chen's cemetery were mainly renovated. At the same time, we should pay attention to the secondary development of functions, and deeply explore the historical and cultural values and folk activities of the former residence. At the same time, on the basis of protecting the original building, the internal space of the old building is reused. The exhibition hall is built in the old building, the "China memorial archway boutique exhibition hall" is built in Meixi temple and ancestral hall, the "Chen Fang family history exhibition" is built in Chen Xi Ru residence, and the "Zhuhai celebrity wax museum" is built in Chen Gong ancestral hall, so that tourists can enjoy the exquisite ancient Lingnan buildings in China and appreciate the memorial archways in China We have a certain understanding of the culture and the human history of Zhuhai, which increases the cultural connotation of the scenic spot.

Zhuhai is rich in historical sites. Chen family cemetery

Chen family cemetery covers an area of 2000, built in the late Qing Dynasty. Chen Fang, his wife and two concubines (Mrs. Lin and anonymous), Chen gengyu, his third son, and Chen Yong'an, his eldest grandson, are buried in the garden. In the garden are the stone tablets of "shengjingjiacheng" mentioned by Mo Rongxin, the governor of Guangdong during the period of the Republic of China.

Small memorial archway

Built in 1891 (the 17th year of Guangxu), it was awarded to Chen Fang's parents by Emperor Guangxu to praise Chen Fang's family for their charity and help their neighbors. Chen Renchang, Chen Fang's father, was granted the title of doctor Ronglu and his mother, Zeng's wife Yipin Gaoming. The archway is 12 meters high, 12.2 meters wide, 4.6 meters deep, with double veranda, 8 columns, 3 rooms and 3 archways.

Slate Road

It was built in 1894. In 1890, after returning from Hawaii, Chen Fang first opened the "Four Seas Fangyuan Hotel" in Macao, and then operated the shipping business from Macao to Hong Kong. At that time, the roads in Meixi village, located in the countryside, were muddy. For the convenience of going back and forth to Macao, Chen Fang spent a lot of money to build this slate road from Meixi in his hometown to guanzha in Macao. All the roads were made of stone strips with a thickness of more than 20 cm and a width of 1.5 meters. Many of them had been damaged due to the age. It is said that Chen Fang, his guests and business friends followed this slate road with a length of about 10 km Go to Meixi or return to Macao. This road later became part of Qiguan highway.

Memorial archway group

There are three memorial archways in the original site, one of which was built in 1886, that is, the 12th year of Guangxu. In this year, Zhuhai was hit by a huge flood, and many villagers were displaced and homeless. Chen Fang, who is far away in a foreign country, received the news and donated 3000 liang of silver to send back to China, asking the court to help the victims. Emperor Guangxu was very moved when he heard the memorial, so he gave him a stone archway to praise him. The memorial archway is 12 meters high, 12.2 meters wide and 4.6 meters deep. Chen Fang was granted a second-class decoration and a second-class flower plume.

The archway on the left was built in 1891 by Chen Yong'an, the eldest grandson of Chen Fang, who asked the imperial court to grant it to his father Chen long. The archway is 10.1 meters high, 9 meters wide and 4.6 meters deep. It has a single veranda, four pillars, three rooms and three archways. Chen long and his wife were granted the titles of Fengzheng doctor and Wupin Taiyi lady.

The one on the right was pulled down by red guards with cattle and tractors during the cultural revolution. It is said that when the red guards wanted to pull down the other two archways, the villagers of Meixi sat under the archways, and the red guards stopped.

Blockhouse No.1

The watchtower was built in 1896. It was used to protect Meixi village and Chenjia courtyard. It was all made of granite, with strict structure and firm construction. The building is divided into three floors, the top floor is the mixing platform, the middle floor is the shooting place, and the bottom floor is the rest room and entrance.
