The predecessor of the school is the Radio School of the Central Military Commission, which was born in Ruijin, Jiangxi Province in 1931. It is the first engineering and technical school founded by Mao Zedong and other revolutionaries of the older generation. In 1958, the school moved to Xi'an. In 1966, it became a local institution. In 1988, it became its current name.
Since its founding 84 years ago, the university has always been attached great importance by the party and the state. It is one of the key construction projects in the first five year plan and one of the 20 key universities approved by the central government in 1959.
