Founded in 1958, Shandong University of traditional Chinese medicine was identified as a national key university of traditional Chinese medicine in 1978. In 1981, it became a key university in Shandong Province. It is an excellent university for undergraduate teaching evaluation by the Ministry of education, one of the first five famous universities with characteristics of applied basic talents training in Shandong Province, and one of the first batch of collaborative innovation centers of colleges and universities in Shandong Province. The university has the largest number of national key disciplines in provincial universities. It was the first to obtain the authorization of master's and doctor's degrees, the first to set up a post doctoral research mobile station, and the first to become the chief undertaking unit of the national "973" project.

Adhering to the school motto of "benevolence, erudition and practice", the university has given full play to the advantages of traditional Chinese medicine, paid close attention to the connotation construction, gradually formed the school running characteristics of "cultural people, heavy foundation, emphasis on Inheritance and innovation", and cultivated tens of thousands of specialized talents for the country and society. In 2007, the school moved from Lixia District of Jinan City to Changqing, the hometown of bianque, with a total area of 1829 Mu and a construction area of 545000 square meters. The school library has a collection of 1.871 million paper books, 509000 e-books and 30000 rare ancient books, which is the key protection unit of ancient books in Shandong Province. There are 14 secondary colleges, including 3 directly affiliated hospitals, 11 non directly affiliated hospitals, 24 teaching hospitals, 97 practice teaching bases and 10 joint training bases for Postgraduates in Shandong Province. There is a national experimental teaching demonstration center and a national off campus practice education base for college students.

It has 24 undergraduate majors, involving medicine, science, arts, engineering, management, education and other disciplines; it has 3 doctoral degree authorized first level disciplines and 15 doctoral programs of traditional Chinese medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, and integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine; 8 master degree authorized first level disciplines and 44 master programs, which covers all second level disciplines of traditional Chinese medicine, integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine, and begins to infiltrate into surrounding disciplines; It has the right to confer doctor's degree of traditional Chinese medicine and master's degree of traditional Chinese medicine, Chinese pharmacy, pharmacy and biomedical engineering. Up to now, the school has 21000 full-time students, including more than 2700 graduate students. The university has established long-term friendly cooperative relations with nearly 30 well-known foreign universities and medical institutions.

The University adheres to winning with characteristics and striving to be first-class, forming a number of advantages and characteristic disciplines. At present, there are three national key disciplines of TCM basic theory, TCM history literature and TCM internal medicine, 29 national key disciplines of TCM administration, 9 national key clinical specialties and 14 national key specialties of TCM administration, 4 national characteristic specialties of TCM, TCM, acupuncture and massage, and pharmaceutical engineering, and 11 provincial characteristic specialties; Three national excellent open courses and 33 provincial excellent courses will be built.

The university pays attention to the drive of scientific and technological innovation, creates a first-class scientific research platform, and achieves fruitful results. At present, there are three post doctoral research stations of traditional Chinese medicine, traditional Chinese medicine and integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine, including one key laboratory of the Ministry of education, six three-level key laboratories of the State Administration of traditional Chinese medicine, two key laboratories of the State Administration of traditional Chinese medicine, two key laboratories of Shandong Province, three engineering technology research centers of Shandong Province, and one Engineering Laboratory of Shandong Province University collaborative innovation center. During the 12th Five Year Plan period, it has undertaken 780 scientific research projects at or above the Department and bureau level, including 102 national level projects, and won the first prize of science and technology progress award of Shandong Province for three consecutive years. Since the establishment of the University, 22 scientific research achievements have won the first prize at the national and provincial levels. It has the national clinical research base of traditional Chinese medicine, the national major new drug creation platform (Shandong) traditional Chinese medicine unit platform.
