Hainan University is a comprehensive key university of Hainan Province, which was established in August 2007 by the merger of the former South China Tropical Agricultural University and the former Hainan University. It is a University jointly built by the people's Government of Hainan Province, the Ministry of education and the Ministry of finance. In December 2008, approved by the state, it became the key construction University of "211 Project".

The former South China University of tropical agriculture was founded in 1958. It is closely combined with the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences, which was founded in 1954. It is also known as the "two academies of tropical agriculture" and is known as the "Twin Star" in the field of tropical agricultural science and education in China. Through arduous efforts, the "two academies" have made China the only country in the world that has successfully planted rubber in a large area within the range of 18 ° to 24 ° north latitude, and miraculously rose from the original blank country of rubber planting to the fifth largest rubber producing country in the world. As a result, the university has established a unique position in the research field of rubber and tropical agriculture, and won more than 900 scientific and educational achievements, including the first prize of national invention, the first prize of national science and Technology Progress Award and the second prize of national teaching achievements, which has made great contributions to China's national defense and local economic and social development.

The former Hainan University started in 1983 on a barren land. Before the merger, it established a discipline system with the largest scale, social radiation and wide influence in the province, and became a provincial comprehensive key university. Hu Yaobang, former general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, inscribed the name of the school. In 2005, the University was rated as excellent in the undergraduate teaching evaluation of the Ministry of education, and was approved to set up the National College Students' cultural quality education base. The quality of personnel training and scientific research ability have been greatly improved, and the overall level of running a school has been continuously improved, which has made a positive contribution to the economic and social development of Hainan.

At present, there are 37101 full-time students, 33748 ordinary undergraduates, 3179 postgraduates, 174 doctoral students, 3390 adult education students and 246 international students.
