Founded in 1953, Hebei University of Geosciences (formerly Shijiazhuang Institute of Economics) is one of the five universities directly under the Ministry of land and resources. It is a University jointly built by the Ministry of land and resources and the people's Government of Hebei Province. It is a key backbone University under Hebei Province. Li Tingdong, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is the honorary president of the University.

At the beginning of the establishment of our school, the subjects and specialties of Geology and economic management are unique and well-known in China. Up to now, the university has 7 disciplines of science, engineering, management, economics, law, literature and art, and 60 undergraduate majors, including 4 national characteristic majors, 4 national and provincial comprehensive reform pilot majors, 4 undergraduate education innovation highlands of colleges and universities in Hebei Province, and 8 brand characteristic majors of Colleges and universities in Hebei Province. The university enrolls students from 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions in China, with about 18000 full-time Master and undergraduate students. In 2016, the University became the construction unit of doctoral degree authorization.

At present, there are 915 full-time teachers, 48% of whom have senior professional and technical positions, and 90% have doctor's or master's degrees.
