Northwest University of political science and law is located in Xi'an, a famous historical and cultural city in the world. Northwest University of political science and law has a glorious revolutionary tradition and rich cultural heritage, which has a history of 74 years. The predecessor of the school is the Northern Shaanxi public school founded by the Communist Party of China in Yan'an in 1937; in 1941, the Northern Shaanxi public school merged with China Women's University and Zedong youth cadre school to establish Yan'an University; in 1949, Yan'an University moved to Xi'an and changed its name to the northwest people's revolutionary University; in 1953, the Northwest Bureau decided to reorganize the northwest people's revolutionary University into the northwest political and legal cadre school, and at the end of the next year, it was reorganized into the middle school In September 1958, the law department of Northwest University was transferred to the Northwest Branch of the central Cadre School of political science and law, and Xi'an College of political science and law was established. The school became one of the four political science and law colleges in China, and also the first higher political science and law college in Northwest China. Since then, it has begun the history of ordinary higher education. In 1963, it was renamed Northwest College of political science and law. In November 2006, it was approved by the Ministry of education The school was renamed Northwest University of political science and law.

The school has two campuses, Yanta and Chang'an, covering an area of 1347 mu. It has six experimental training centers, including legal practice, material evidence technology, modern communication and economic management, 16 professional and basic laboratories, and more than 80 teaching research and practice bases.
