Xihua University was founded in 1960 as Sichuan Institute of agricultural machinery. In response to Chairman Mao Zedong's call that "mechanization is the fundamental way out for agriculture", it was one of the undergraduate colleges of agricultural machinery established in seven regions of China at that time. In 1972, it was renamed Chengdu Institute of agricultural machinery. In 1978, it was listed as a provincial key university by Sichuan provincial government. In 1983, it was renamed Chengdu University of agricultural machinery Sichuan Institute of technology. In 2003, Sichuan Institute of technology merged with Chengdu teachers college to form Xihua University, and in 2008, Sichuan Institute of economic management was merged.
