Baotou Normal University is an ordinary normal university, which was approved by the Ministry of education in March 2000. It is a combination of Baotou normal college, Baotou Normal University and Baotou Institute of education. The original name of Baotou Teachers' college was Baotou Teachers' College, which was founded in 1958, closed in 1963, resumed in 1971 and renamed Baotou Teachers' College in 1996. Baotou normal school was founded in 1947. The former Baotou Institute of education was founded in 1978. In June 2003, Baotou Normal University, Baotou Iron and Steel College and Baotou Medical College merged to form Inner Mongolia University of science and technology. At the end of 2004, with the approval of the people's Government of the autonomous region, Baotou Normal College of Inner Mongolia University of science and technology was restored as an ordinary undergraduate normal college with independent legal personality. Over the past 50 years since its establishment, the university has been adhering to serving basic education and regional economic and social development. It has accumulated rich experience in running schools and formed distinctive characteristics of running schools. It has developed into an ordinary normal university integrating full-time undergraduate and junior college education, postgraduate education and continuing education, and integrating pre service training and post service training.

The school has a college of Arts, School of politics and law, School of history and culture, School of foreign languages, School of fine arts, School of music, School of Educational Sciences, School of Mathematical Sciences, School of physical science and technology, School of chemistry, School of biological science and technology, School of resources and environment, School of physical education, School of information science and technology, School of Marxism, School of economics and management Six secondary colleges and graphic information center and other three teaching and research auxiliary departments.
