It is about 2 meters long, and the largest one can be more than 5 meters long. The head is slightly triangular and the snout is long and sharp. There are many bony plates on the surface of the head. There are 2 pairs of snout whiskers in front of the mouth, the inner one is slightly in front, and the outer one is later. The eyes are small and close to the rostrum. The left and right branchial membranes extend to the ventral surface and heal with each other. There are 5 rows of rhombic bone plates with sharp and slightly curved spines. The dorsal bone plate is one row, large, 10-16 pieces, located in the middle of the back, directly connected to the caudal fin from head to back. There were 32-46 dorsal plates, 8-12 ventral plates and 1-2 less obvious plates behind the base of the pelvic fin. The rest of the body is smooth and scaleless. The dorsal fin is 43-57, located at the rear; the gluteal fin is 26-36; its starting point is below the rear of the dorsal fin. Caudal fin askew, upper leaf long and pointed. The body surface is black and cyan, the two sides are yellow, and the abdomen is gray white; the back bone plate is yellow, and the side bone plate is yellowish brown.

They live in large rivers, mostly at the confluence of two rivers, the entrance of tributaries and the vortex of rapids. Prey on other fish. It is distributed in Northeast China, especially in Heilongjiang Province.

The liver (liver of Milu) and swim bladder (swim bladder of Milu) of this animal are also used for medicine.
