[plant morphology] Styrax

Trees, 10-15m high. Leaves alternate; long petiolate; stipules small, caducous; leaves palmately 5-lobed, occasionally 3 - or 7-lobed, lobes ovate or oblong ovate, apex acute, base cordate, margin serrate. Flowers are small, unisexual, monoecious, mostly in round head, yellow green. The inflorescences of male flowers are arranged in racemes; the male flowers have no perianth and only bracts; the stamens are numerous, the anthers are oblong, 2-locular, and the filaments are short. The inflorescence of the female flower is solitary; the petiole is pendulous; the perianth is small; the stamen is degenerated; the pistil is many, the base is healed, the ovary is half inferior, 2-locular, with several ovules, 2-style, curved. The inflorescence is globose, about 2.5 cm in diameter, with many capsules and persistent spiny styles; the capsule apex is beak shaped, and the apex splits at maturity. They like to grow in moist and fertile soil. Native to southern Asia Minor. It is cultivated in Guangxi.
