[plant morphology] 1. Mahonia hardwood, also known as Phellodendron amurense, Phellodendron amurense, Phellodendron amurense, Phyllostachys pistachio, and rattan.
Evergreen shrubs. Up to 4 meters. Pinnate compound leaves alternate, 30-45 cm long, 9-16 leaflets, broadly ovate or long ovate, 6-12 cm long, apex acuminate, margin each with 2-8 teeth, base nearly cordate but unequal; upper green, lower grayish white. Inflorescence tufted, stem apex; peduncle stout, compressed, flower dense, yellow; bract 1, ovate lanceolate; sepal 9; petal 6; stamen 6, pistil 1. Berries ovate, dark blue, powdered with wax. The flowering period is from May to July. The fruit ripens from November to January next year.
Grown on hillsides and shrubs; also cultivated. It is distributed in South, middle and East China.
② Mahonia tenuifolia, also known as maoertou, daoguashanshu, huangtianzhu, Mahonia tenuifolia.
Evergreen shrubs. It is 1-2m high. Stem erect, much branched, spineless. The leaflets are 7-13, leathery, narrowly lanceolate, 8-12 cm long, apex long acuminate, base cuneate, with 6-13 spiny serrations on each edge, grayish yellow green below, but without waxy white powder. The raceme is 3-5 cm long, arising from the axillary of the bud scales at the top of the branch; the bisexual flowers are yellow, most of them are dense, with short stalks; the sepals are 9; the petals are 6; the anthers are 2-lobed; the ovary is superior, 1-locular. The berries are ovoid, blue black and powdered with wax.
It is also cultivated. It is distributed in Sichuan, Hubei and Zhejiang.
⑧ Mahonia in South China
Evergreen shrub, about 2 m high. Stem erect, less branched. Pinnate compound leaf, 9-17 leaflets, ovate elliptic, long elliptic lanceolate, 6-12 box meters long, apex spiny, base skewed, broadly cuneate or truncated, margin with 2-6 teeth. The flowers are loose, drooping and yellowish; the rachis is long and thin, and the base of pedicel is ovoid; the sepals are 9, 3 rows; the petals are 6, with 2 lobes at the apex and 2 nectaries at the base; the stamens are 6, with 2 lobes; the pistils are 1, and the ovary is 1-locular. Berries subglobose, bluish black, powdered with wax. The flowering period is from January to February. The fruit ripens in May to June.
It is also cultivated. It is distributed in the South and southwest of China.
The roots, stems and fruits of the above three plants (Mahonia sinensis, Mahonia sinensis, Mahonia sinensis) are also used for medicine. See the special regulations for details.

[medicinal materials] 1. Mahonia leaves are oval in shape, with sharp spines at the apex, heart-shaped or nearly truncated at the base, and 2-8 spiny teeth on both sides of the edge. The tooth tips are slightly curved toward the back of the leaves, with purple green luster on the top and yellow green on the bottom. It's hard and brittle. Weak breath, weak taste.
