[source] it is the dry rhizome of Dryopteris multiflora.
[plant morphology] Dryopteris multiflora, also known as Dryopteris latifolia.
Perennial herbs, 50-95 cm high. Rhizome obliquely ascending, densely covered with dark brown or chestnut black lanceolate scales. The leaves are oblong, thick papery, almost equal in length to petiole, 20-30 cm in width, acuminate at the top, more or less caudate, brown ovate lanceolate scales (sometimes the lower part of scales is raised and bubbly), 2-pinnate or 3-pinnate; the pinnae are lanceolate, 10-18 cm long at the base , 3-4 cm wide, long acuminate; pinnules oblong lanceolate, obtuse, base auriculate, margin lobed or with sparse obtuse teeth. Lateral veins pinnate branched. Sporangia are found in the middle of venules; the cysts are round and reniform.
Wild in hillside, forest, ditch, wet stone gap. It is distributed in South China, the Yangtze River Basin, north to the south of Henan Province.
