The algal body is purplish red, 4-10 cm high, up to 15 cm; it grows in clusters from discoid fixator, with irregular forked branches, often constricted at the branches. Branches up to 4 mm wide, subcylindrical. The internal structure is loose or hollow. The algae sometimes collapse. Tetrasporangia scattered in the cortex and divided in a crisscross pattern. The mature cysts are small, spherical or hemispherical, protruding from the surface and densely distributed on the algae.

Most of them grow on the rocks in the lower part of the middle tidal zone and high tidal zone, often forming clusters. Along the coast of China, it is distributed from Liaodong Peninsula in the north to Keelung in Taiwan in the South and Naozhou island in Leizhou Peninsula in the south.
