Evergreen twining shrubs, 2.5-4 meters long, all glabrous. Branchlets brown or purplish brown. The leaves are simple, alternate, leathery, oblong to oblong, oblanceolate or elliptic, 5-10 cm long and 2-5 cm wide, apex acuminate, base cuneate, margin sparsely glandular, denticulate, occasionally entire, dark green above and light green below; petiole 1.5-3 cm long. Flowers unisexual, dioecious, solitary in axils of leaves; pedicels slender and drooping; sepals and petals are not very different, 6-9 pieces, often 3 pieces in a row, the outside is smaller, ovate to elliptic, the inside is larger, oblong to broadly obovate, yellow, fragrant; stamens are many, gathered into a head, filaments are very short; carpels are many, integrated into a sub spherical, stigma white, disk-shaped. The small berry is spherical, integrated into head shape, dark blue when ripe, with white powder, and 1-3 seeds inside. Seeds reniform, grayish brown, glossy. The flowering period is from May to July. The fruit is hot from September to October.
Wild on hillsides or beside streams. It is distributed in southwest, middle and southeast of China.

[medicinal material] the dry root is 1.5-2.3 cm thick, slightly curved, with branches and fine roots, purple brown skin, longitudinal furrows and transverse cracks. The root bark is as thick as 1 / 3 of the diameter of the wood, the wood is reddish brown, and there are vessel dots around. It is fragrant and bitter. The dry root bark is a roll or irregular piece of different sizes, about 1-4 mm thick. Most of the emboli on the outer surface fell off and showed purple endothelium. The inner surface is dark brown to grayish brown, hard and brittle. It is better to be dry, uniform, solid and purplish brown.
It is mainly produced in Zhejiang and Jiangxi. In addition, it is also produced in Jiangsu, Fujian and other places.
