[plant morphology] Machilus yunnanensis

Tree, 20 m high; crown globose, fragrant; bark grayish brown. Branchlets grayish green, smooth, glabrous. Leaves alternate, leathery, obovate, 7-9 cm long, 4-5 cm wide, base broadly cuneate, dark green above, greenish pale below, glabrous on both sides, entire, with pinnate veins, 8-9 pairs of lateral veins, protruding below; petiole 1.5-2 cm long, glabrous. Cone inflorescence axils in involucre axils; involucre early fall; yellow flowers; perianth 6, rectangular round, with villous inner surface, into 2 rings, outer ring smaller; fertile stamen 9, anther 4-locular, the third round stamen anther outward lobed. Fruit elliptic, 1 cm long, 5 mm in diameter, black at maturity, with slightly expanded persistent perianth segments at base. The flowering period is late autumn and early winter.
