Hairtail

The body is elongated and banded, very laterally flat. The dorsal ventral margin of the anterior part of the body is almost parallel and tapering toward the tail. The body length is about 70 cm. The head is long and narrow, the front is sharp, the back is widest at the interocular space, the side is flat, the abdomen is narrow, and the snout is long and sharp. The eye is equal in size, the position is high, and the upper edge of the eye reaches the dorsal edge of the head. The interocular space is flat and the center is slightly concave. The nostril is small, 1 on each side, long oval, located in front of the eyes. The mouth is large and does not incline. The posterior edge of the cleft reaches below the eye. The lower jaw is longer than the upper jaw. There are two pairs of big canines in the front of maxilla, with barbs at the tip, which can be embedded in the mandibular fossa when the mouth is closed; there are two pairs of canines in the front of mandible, which are smaller than those in maxilla and exposed outside the mouth when the mouth is closed. Each side of the mandible has a row of flat and sharp teeth. The tongue and vomer were edentulous. The gill rakes are short and thin with irregular size. Body smooth without scales, complete lateral line, above the pectoral fin, there is a significant bend, folded to the ventral surface, along the abdominal margin back into a straight line. The dorsal fin is 130-144 long, starting from the front of the posterior upper horn of the gill hole and several along the whole length of the dorsal margin. The anal fin is 107-113, only the spines are exposed. Pectoral fin is short and pointed, 11-12, lower. No pelvic fins. The tail is long, tapering backward, and the end is flagellate. Body silver white, dorsal fin and pectoral fin light gray, with small black spots. The tail is black.

It lives in the middle lower layer of the open sea and has migratory habits. It is widely distributed in China from the Yellow Sea, Bohai Sea to the South China Sea.
