In the first year of Yongle in Ming Dynasty, he was recommended to the imperial hospital. Soon after, the imperial court planned to send eunuch Zheng He of the three guarantees to the Western Ocean to carry out the national policy of peaceful and friendly "tribute trade", and "preach and educate overseas countries" and "show China's prosperity and strength to attract distant people". Chen Yicheng was selected as the medical officer and governor of the fleet because of his youth and excellent medical skills. During the period from the third year of Yongle to the eighth year of Xuande (1405-1433), Chen Yicheng followed Zheng He to the Western Ocean seven times, which lasted for 28 years. It has traveled to more than 30 countries and regions in Asia and Africa, reaching as far as the east coast of Africa and the mouth of the Red Sea.
Zheng He led a large fleet of ocean going ships. Each time they went to the Western Ocean, there were more than 200 treasure ships, carrying more than 27000 people, and more than 180 medical officers and doctors. Each round trip was more than 100000 Li. In order to ensure the successful completion of the voyage, Chen Yicheng carefully stored nearly a thousand kinds of herbs and medicaments on board, and treated the fleet members in time with his superb medical skills. Every time when they take a rest in Hong Kong, they also treat the local patients and give them free medicine, which is highly praised by the people of all countries along the way. After several missions to the west, Chen Yicheng was promoted to the Supreme Court.
He is good at poetry and painting, especially at plum blossom. He once wrote a poem about the grand occasion of his voyage to the Western Ocean, leaving behind such lines as "every time nine heavy metals enter the ocean, the sea will be salty and take ten thousand boats". After his last return from the west, he went back to his hometown and died of illness in Fengjing.
Zheng He's voyages to the West were 87 years earlier than Columbus's first voyage to America and 114 years earlier than Magellan's voyages from America to the Philippines. Chen Yicheng has made outstanding contributions to this great pioneering work in the history of world navigation.
