Qian siliang was born on January 9, 1907 in Xinye, Henan Province.
In September 1917, he entered the third grade of the 25th primary school in Beijing.
In April 1918, he transferred to Tianjin private first primary school.
In 1919, he graduated from junior high school and entered the primary school affiliated to Beijing Normal University.
In 1922, he was admitted to Tianjin Nankai Middle School.
He graduated from Nankai Middle School in June 1927 and was admitted to the Department of chemistry of Peking National Tsinghua University in September.
In 1931, he received a Bachelor of Science degree from Tsinghua University. In September of the same year, he was awarded a G scholarship. He went to the United States to study with Wu Dayou and Zhang Zikai (Qian siliang's brother-in-law) from Shanghai. He entered the Department of chemistry at the University of Illinois for a degree.
In June 1932, he got his master of Science degree.
In June 1934, he received his pH. Due to his excellent performance, he was selected as a member of phibeta kappa Association. In August of the same year, Qian siliang returned from the United States and applied to be a professor in the Department of chemistry of Peking University to teach general chemistry. During his stay in Peking University, Qian siliang was deeply loved by his students for his profound knowledge and enlightening lectures. Many students had no choice but to listen outside the classroom. He has a superhuman memory. Many years later, he still recites the names of the students he taught and their academic achievements accurately, which shows that he is serious in teaching.
In July 1937, the Anti Japanese war broke out and Peiping fell into the hands of the enemy and the puppets. Peking University, Tsinghua University and Nankai University were forced to move to the south. In the winter of this year, they formed Changsha temporary University. Qian siliang was a professor in the Department of chemical engineering of the school of engineering.
In February 1938, Changsha temporary University moved to Kunming and was officially renamed National Southwest United University. Qian siliang is a professor of Chemistry Department of Southwest Associated University, teaching organic chemistry. Due to rigorous scholarship and good guidance, he is well-known among the professors of the United University.
In 1940, his father was stabbed to death by the enemy and puppets in Shanghai. Qian siliang went back to Shanghai from Kunming to mourn. Later, due to traffic congestion, he had to stay in Shanghai and work as a researcher in Shanghai Institute of chemical medicine.
In 1945, after the victory of the Anti Japanese War, Qian siliang was appointed director of the Chemical Industry Department of the Ministry of economic affairs.
In 1946, after Peking University moved back to Beiping and officially resumed classes, Qian siliang immediately resigned from the Ministry of economic affairs and left Shanghai for the north. He returned to Peking University as professor of chemistry and later as director of the Department of chemistry.
On January 8, 1949, Qian siliang and his wife, Zhang Wandu, left Peiping for Nanjing with their three sons, Qian Chun, Qian Xu and Qian Fu. In response to the appointment of Fu Sinian, President of Taiwan University, he went to Taiwan as a professor and provost of the Department of chemistry of Taiwan University. He once acted as the dean of the school of science of Taiwan University and became Fu Sinian's main assistant. During this period, Qian siliang devoted himself to the reform of the enrollment system and transfer system, which laid the foundation for the joint enrollment system of colleges and universities in Taiwan.
In November 1950, Qian siliang represented Taiwan University at the "International Conference of university presidents" held in Paris.
In March 1951, recommended by Hu Shi, Qian siliang became president of Taiwan University after the late Fu Sinian. In the same year, he served as the president of "China Chemical Association" and the president of "China Society for the revitalization of science".
In 1957, Qian siliang and Mei Yiqi were appointed as the third members of the Council of Academia Sinica in Taiwan.
In February 1959, he served as a member of the "National Scientific Committee for long term development" (later renamed "National Scientific Committee") of the Taiwan authorities. In July of the same year, as president of NTU, he attended the opening ceremony of the fourth Academia Sinica conference in Taiwan. In December, he was re elected as the fourth member of the Academia Sinica Council.
In August 1961, the fourth council of Taiwan's Academia Sinica held its second meeting. Qian siliang and Mei Yiqi were nominated as candidates for the fourth "academician" at the same time. Considering that Mei Yiqi is the president of his alma mater (Tsinghua University in Beijing), as a student, he should be courteous to his teachers. Therefore, Qian siliang insisted on asking for the withdrawal of his nomination, which was a good talk for a while.
In 1964, Qian siliang was elected as the fifth academician of Academia Sinica, belonging to the mathematical group.
In April 1970, after Wang Shijie resigned from the post of president of Academia Sinica, Qian siliang was appointed as the fifth president of Taiwan's Academia Sinica (the first four were Cai Yuanpei, Zhu Jiahua, Hu Shi and Wang Shijie in turn) after the election of the Council of Academia Sinica held in May. Yan Zhenxing took over the post of president of NTU. Qian also serves as the chairman of the board of directors of China Education and culture foundation.
In November 1971, he served as chairman of the "Atomic Energy Commission of the Executive Yuan" of the Taiwan authorities for nine and a half years.
In 1974, Qian Xu, the second son of Qian siliang, was nominated as a candidate for the 10th Academia Sinica meeting. Considering the limited number of new academicians, Qian siliang repeatedly urged the participants not to vote for Qian Xu and give up the number to others. Because of his sincere attitude and sincere words, the participants finally accepted his request. Qian Xu has a high reputation in the academic circle, but he was not elected because he had no problem. It was not until 1976 that he was elected member of the 11th Academia Sinica of Taiwan, belonging to the biology group. Father and son have been elected academicians, which is a good story in the scientific community.
In 1980, Taiwan's Academia Sinica held an International Sinology conference in Nangang, with 273 participants at home and abroad. The conference is divided into six groups: language and literature, history and archaeology, folk custom and culture, thought and philosophy, literature and art history. Qian siliang was appointed chairman of the proceedings Committee of the International Sinological conference of Academia Sinica and wrote a preface to the book. There are nine volumes in the book, and another one is the general catalogue. It contains 218 Chinese and English papers and is published by Academia Sinica.
In 1983, he died during his term of office, and presided over seven academician meetings of Academia Sinica. During his tenure as president of Academia Sinica, Qian siliang established the American Institute of culture, the three people's principles Institute, the Institute of Geosciences, the Institute of Biochemistry and the Institute of information science, and set up four preparatory offices, namely the biomedical, statistical, atomic and molecular science institutes and the comprehensive research office of molecular biology.
In May 1983, accompanied by Zhu Yan, director of the Taiwan Institute of American culture, Qian siliang visited West Germany and the United States. During his visit to the United States, Qian's alma mater, the University of Illinois, awarded him an honorary doctorate of Science in recognition of his achievements in science and education. The visit lasted for one and a half months. After returning to Taiwan in June, Qian siliang was finally forced to be hospitalized due to overwork. However, he still insisted on handling daily affairs during his illness and eventually suffered from acute myocardial infarction.
On September 15, 1983, he died in the Affiliated Hospital of Taiwan University at the age of 76.
