He once served as the director of the state language and writing Commission, Secretary of the Party group, and general manager of the commercial press. He once presided over and participated in the formulation of China's first large-scale dictionary publishing plan, planned and led the publication of modern Chinese dictionary, Chinese English dictionary, etymology and other dictionaries, and wrote many works. He found Zhang Yuanji, Hu Yuzhi, Roman Roland, and finally Zhao Yuanren. Chen Yuan understood that Zhao Yuanren organically combined the heart of serving the country with humanistic spirit.
1、 The contribution of publishing industry
1. Lexicography
Chen Yuan has rich experience in compiling dictionaries. He has a set of systematic theories, such as "drawing a line between right and wrong in the work of dictionaries". This is his speech at the working conference on the revision of etymology in 1977, which was later included in his published works. This speech can be used as a textbook for compiling dictionaries. He made a theoretical summary of the principles of compiling dictionaries. His speech is rich in language and strong in logic.
Since March 1974, Yao Wenyuan, taking the "Liaoyuan Coal Mine review group" as the starting point, launched a great criticism movement against the modern Chinese dictionary in the cultural circle, saying that it has a tendency to respect Confucius, interferes with the direction of criticizing Confucius, is a hodgepodge of fengzixiu, is a resurgence of revisionism, is a reactionary trend of thought of capitalist restoration, and so on. Mr. Chen Yuan is under great pressure that others can't imagine. However, he was not frightened by the arrogance of these curfew, and remained calm and stubborn. The great criticism did not stop him. It was in this era of class struggle and a large number of modern Chinese dictionaries that his famous argument about distinguishing right from wrong in dictionary work came into being. He asked business comrades to put tens of thousands of dictionaries in storage and seal them up skillfully. Soon after the fall of the gang of four, these dictionaries came out of the library at the right time. This is enough to show his wisdom and foresight.
Chinese translation of world famous academic works series
2. Preside over the publication of "Chinese translation of world famous academic works series"
Another contribution of Chen Yuan in publishing work is to organize the publishing of foreign academic works. It has always been the task of the commercial press to introduce western masterpieces to Chinese readers. Before the founding of the people's Republic of China, the commercial press did a lot of work. Chen Yuan began to work in the people's publishing house, and later transferred to the Publishing Bureau of the Ministry of culture. After the cultural revolution, he was sent to the commercial press. Bring order out of chaos, open up the wisdom of the people and rebuild the Chinese nation's personality. This is the ideal experimental site for the remolding of the Chinese nation's personality. He presided over the publication of the book entitled "the world famous literary work in Chinese translation", which aims to "accumulate the essence of the times civilization," accumulated by the people of a time, a nation, a class, a pioneer of a trend of thought, "to the future generations to go to the examination and to examine." To censor, to nourish. ".
After Chen Yuan went to business, he made a huge plan, including works from three sources of Marxism, works from the Enlightenment period of capitalist countries, as well as theories of modern and modern schools. There are 1614 kinds of plans on a large scale. Before the "Cultural Revolution", there was a part, but after 10 years of turmoil, the planning was forced to stop. Chen Yuan was also involved in the formulation of the plan. In the early 1970s, Chen Yuan was sent into business. After the cultural revolution, Chen Yuan focused on this work. He has sorted out the past single editions of such books, including those published in business before liberation. After sorting out, Chen originally named them "series of world famous works translated into Chinese", which covers philosophy, politics, economy and history from ancient to modern times in the West. He believes that the authors of these books are pioneers and representatives of an era, a nation, a stage and a trend of thought, and their influence is self-evident. Over the years, more than 400 books have been published. Chen Yuan has contributed to the development and relay of this important project.
In 1984, Chen Yuan was transferred from business and appointed to preside over the work of the Chinese language and writing Commission. However, he is still working as a business consultant and continues to focus on the planning of foreign academic masterpieces. On March 14 of the same year, Comrade Hu Qiaomu reported his work to Comrade Deng Xiaoping. Comrade Deng Xiaoping proposed to systematically translate and publish foreign academic masterpieces. The transmission of this speech caused great shock in the publishing and intellectual circles. On behalf of the Commercial Press, Chen Yuan held a series of meetings of scholars and translators to discuss the business re planning and implement the spirit of Comrade Deng Xiaoping's instructions. He believes that Shang and Deng affairs should regard this as "an overwhelming task, an indisputable task. The whole library should make clear the importance of this task and try to complete it." To this end, we have invited celebrities from the academic circles to discuss for many times, and held a large-scale academic conference in Xiangshan to discuss how to make long-term plans and how to select books and translate them. Inside the Commercial Press, he mobilized all the comrades in the library to offer suggestions.
As for how to write the preface of western academic masterpieces, Chen Yuan emphasized that the quality of the preface should be improved. He believes that to be academic, "don't swear, don't flatter, there must be an academic atmosphere." For the western modern academic, we should pay attention to the rigorous treatment, and also pay attention to the way of distribution. The preface should be written in accordance with the spirit of Comrade Xiaoping's instructions.
3. Create a column in reading magazine
In the 1980s, Mr. Chen Yuan opened a column in Beijing's Dushu magazine, called in the dense forest of words, which is simple, wonderful, humorous and highly readable. Later, he compiled his column into a book, which is almost the same in Beijing reading circles.
4. Planning and publishing the complete works of Zhao Yuanren
In 1990, Mr. Chen Yuan retired from the position of director of the state language and writing working committee and chose to work as a business consultant. He is still energetic, thinking is still agile, for the development of business advice. Zhao Yuanren's complete works, 20 million words in 20 volumes, is a major publishing plan that he recommended and personally planned for business at the age of 80. As early as 19
