In 1986, Zhang Yang was admitted to the Chinese Department of Sun Yat sen University. He was transferred to the director department of the Central Academy of drama because of the admission of cut in students from grade 87 of the Central Academy of drama. In 1992, he was assigned to Beijing Film Studio as director after graduation.

In 1997, he directed his first film "love spicy hot", CO starring Gao Yuanyuan and Xu Jinglei. The film shows the love life of contemporary city people. Zhang Yang also won the best director's maiden work award of the 18th Golden Rooster Award of China Film and the best director award of the 5th Beijing University Students Film Festival.

In 1999, he directed the plot film "bathing" with an ordinary old bathhouse in Beijing as the background. This film reflects the family relationship of neighborhood, father, son and brother. He won the best director award of the 47th St. Sebastian International Film Festival for this film.
