In 1968, when Zhang Guozhu was in University, he shot his first advertisement. After graduating from the Physical Education Department of Taiwan Normal University, he was a high school physical education teacher.

He is an actor from Taiwan, China, and his daughter-in-law is Zhuang Wenru, an actor from Taiwan, China.
In 2008, Zhang Guozhu remarried with his girlfriend may, 24 years younger than him.
On March 10, 2015, Zhang Yuanyuan, the daughter of Zhang Zhen and Zhuang Wenru, Zhang Guozhu's granddaughter, was born.
