Character evaluation
Wang Tong is one of the most important filmmakers in Taiwan. The essence of his film art is his concern for the little people at the bottom, his deep sense of history and humanistic care. He devoted himself to presenting the tragicomedy of little people to the audience in a very simple and plain way. History restores the fictional reality in his lens. He lets the audience follow his characters to feel the sad, bitter, helpless or cruel history. (review of writing)
Wang Tong is an outstanding director in Taiwan's film industry who can give consideration to both artistic level and commercial taste. He is one of the few people who cross Taiwan's two film forms. Critics describe him as Taiwan's Imamura Changping, because he is the same as Imamura Changping, who is not attached to the trend, explores the local cultural ecology through the rigorous dramatic structure, and can maintain the invincible talent in the film industry. Most of Wang Tong's films are devoted to depicting the little people in the big era. The dramatic conflicts in his films are based on the struggle between sincere human beings and disordered time and space. Wang Tong paid special attention to image management. No matter the mirror position, light and shadow, color or scenery, they are almost perfect. (review of film literature)
