Character evaluation
Fang Yuping not only influenced the pace of the "new wave" of Hong Kong films, but also occupied one third of his own land in the history of Hong Kong produced art films with a small number of personal works. His consistent and uncompromising creative principle, as well as his experimental spirit of continuous narrative and breakthrough in a single theme, are also beyond the reach of many younger generations. (Sohu Entertainment review)
Fang Yuping's repeated exploration of the ecology and mentality of Hong Kong teenagers in their growing up period and the relationship between their families and society, from a subjective point of view, also marks his review and exploration of art and life. (comments by Rocca, a Hong Kong film culture scholar)
Fang Yuping is almost the only director in the Hong Kong film circle who adheres to the non mainstream line. His works are often performed by non professional actors, which is full of experimental and innovative meaning. He is absolutely the biggest exception to the Hong Kong film industry. In addition to shooting techniques, he has low-key individuality, and insists on paying attention to realism, especially in the real situation, people's own struggle process , is the biggest feature of his films.
